As someone who reads more yuri it's surprising to see the author and readers so adamant that it's not BL. The exact opposite would be happening in the yuri space if it were the exact same story but all the genders were swapped, people would be fighting those who claim it's "not actuallly yuri". If a yuri author tried this they'd be seen as a pussy and the yurifags would be getting out their pitchforks.

Mercury was made by a committee, I meant more like manga-turned-anime. Though even in anime-originals if the writers/producers try to walk around acknowledging the yuri like Madoka Magica, the audience calls them pussies for it too, they don't go along with it like people are for Hikaru.

The stigma is still strong, The only way to convince most people to watch is to let them know it's not really BL. maybe one day we'll get a mainstream BL anime that fully embraces being BL.

I was on the monthly release theeads before the English simulpubs started and the theads were pretty barren but civil. Haven't been around for the post-anime announcement threads, though. That's when the trolls usually start coming in (see: Dungeon Meshi) so I wouldn't be surprised if some shitposters have cropped up.

Easy target for derailing entire threads, but for some reason people always buy into shitposting rhetoric so you'll see random posts on other sites talking about how "the author sold out the moment it got popular," "the author betrayed the fujos who made her," and other such seething.

Yuri is easy for mainstream audiences to digest, bl isn't.
An average guy or girl can like yuri without being a yurifag or gay. Meanwhile the majority of men find gay sex disgusting, plenty of women despise it, and many gay men don't think women can write gay men. There's too many filters.

Despite what some Western fujos claim, there's stigma that BL stories are out of touch with reality stories by women for women, and not meant for a wider audience by design. The mangaka might be wary about labeling it BL for that reason, which I think is fair given how grounded and not like usual BL the manga is. Yuri on the other hand is more niche but known to have more female mangaka and consumers (around a 50/50 split) so there is less assumption for any given yuri to be "slop for straight men".

Something funny, around the time it gained popularity and started to move away from the gay, another author took the same premise, moved it to the city, and had gay sex in the first chapter. Might have been coincidence but it's funnier to think that it wasn't.

Have you ever read a BL? The ""men"" act nothing like men at all, it's fanfiction-tier writing that doesn't care about even being relatable and more about smashing two male characters together in some half-baked setting. People praise The Summer Hikaru Died for having a unique rural backdrop, actual lore, and Yoshiki and Hikaru (even 'Hikaru' to some extent) feeling like normal dumb teenage boys.

Seems like you haven't if you think Hikaru is somehow revolutionary with the "normal dumb teenage boys" or any of the other stuff you listed, especially considering the mc doesn't act like one much at all given how quiet he is.

Speaking of lore I really hope they fix the exposition dumps, it took a lot of the horror out.
