Honest question: Did the Japanese just not now that they could hit the Americas if they went far enough east when they chose this name?
Do you realize that the existence of the Americas was only properly communicated to the old world around 1500?
Can you imagine that the islands of Japan may have been inhabited by people for more than 500 years?
Honest questions.
Not for long.
"The land of the rising sun" predates the discovery of America and it most likely comes from Chinese.
Google says it's from 608, from a Japanese emperor who used the phrase in a letter to the Chinese emperor. He referred to the country of China as the land of the setting sun, so it wasn't even about absolutes. It was really about: The sun's going from my place to your place, or, in words that Anon Babblenons might understand:
The sun's young and nubile when she's with me. Then, when she's used goods, I send her over to you.
Apparently, the Japanese liked that image, so they stuck with the name.
I have a confession to make: I only watched Yuuki Yuuna because I saw and really liked this artist's stuff.
