My sisters mostly watch drama, Korean dramas to be particular. They will watch the occasional shounen and one of my sisters loves Gintama so there's that. I think as long as the fan service isn't absolutely blatant or if it's instead played up for jokes women will give it a try.

I used to work with a lot of females who were into anime. A lot of them loved One Piece, Kimetsu no Yaiba, and shonen in general. Sailor Moon was a nostalgic factor as well, but I don't ever recall them talking about modern Mahou Shoujo stuff like Precure or seasonals and whatnot. I think they also liked Spy X Family, they also played the Oshi No Ko OP over the work speakers so they probably liked that too. Women like a lot of show, even ones you'd assume are made for men.

In 2009 I didn't know a single teen girl my age that watched "girl orientated" anime.
But I knew many that liked Naruto, or a unicorn or two with actual good taste that liked Ghost in the Shell or something like that. Ghost in the Shell was big at that age back then because it was more "western friendly". Most other anime was too fan service filled in a way that was "kinda cringe" because of moe and not enough hardcore service like how Cyb Edgerunners did it. Girls watched Game of Thrones. They like sex and nudity in films. The idea they don't is bullshit. They just don't like the weird kawaii otaku orientated sex scenes.

I can totally get why, that was hard for me to get into myself because it was just too damn baby and boring to me. But I still somehow overcame that barrier for a while.
But I much much prefer raunchy sex service with noir and grit and blood and shit like that. Westerners are just high octane with this stuff I guess. I know some japs actually dislike the moe stuff too, but it's not as much as in the west. And at the end of the day, otaku make the industry run and that's all that really matters in the end - I just wish they tried to market themselves more broadly to more grit orientated audiences that like spice. Girls, believe it or not, like spice a lot. They don't care that much about kawaii, more sexy and naughty.

That being said, I know one anime that sorta floated in between and did it well and that was Gunsmith Cats. I don't understand why they couldn't go down that path to broaden things.

But it's more to do with how they do the sex appeal. It's more badass and less kawaii, but not too much to push away otaku.

I think my sister might have been watching Ghibli Films and Dungeon Meshi recently. She doesn't see anything from most Shounen shows and is abhorrent towards moe stuff (though she did like Sayounara, Zetsuboa Sensei, despite it's fan-service - mainly it's weirdness and humour).

Yeah none of the shit airing is anything like it was in 2009. Now THAT shit was orientated for males, things like battle harems.
But honestly, I've stopped watching anime because most of it is the same old shit over and over again.

So I looked to manga instead.
I'm beginning to see the problem and it's that anime just doesn't try... at all anymore. It's creatively stagnated. The manga industry is somehow avoiding the issues in anime largely and has good innovative ideas. Part of that is small work team, another part is probably lack of liabilities or something to that accord (smaller balance sheet and expectations and a smaller niche market manga can cater too to fund itself).

It was nice that Edgerunners really showed me how much free liquid cash on hand helps and how fucked up debt liabilities have made our media though. That really bothers me in this housing bubble because that and GFC/Covid economic shit is precisely the root cause of that shit. Edgerunners was a breath of fresh air. It got fanservice right - as in it didn't hold back at all. And that was jap/western. But then you see Disney try that and it's fucking garbage and clean like all of their western shit.
I think the problem might be more too many corps in japan, too much of a monopoly in the west. Too many worries about cash flow and not enough freedom to move to create new content. Too much corporate restraint because of the size of the corporation (too big to recommend high risk ventures, or too small to recommend high risk ventures).

I liked Karasu wa aruji, Kusuriya and that slave elf girl (maou no dorei elf or something). That's it. I'm interested in Chikyuu no undou but hasn't checked it yet.

My straight female friend likes Rising of the Shield Hero and 86, which is wild to me because outside of anime, she likes romance stories and little else with regards to a plot. And it's not even steamy romance, just by the book romcoms or romances with slight drama. I don't get it.

But women are the one keeping the hobby alive. Women are famously the biggest spenders. You can only extract money from men by putting in a slot machine or softcore pornography. You can extract money from women by having two men in your anime.

Why is there no CGDCT/female-relationship focused anime for girls? Half of the authors of CGDCT are women yet the audience is still 90% male.

Corporations involved with these things tend to pick for low risk types. Because a lot of guys would read it, and if there's anything I learned about female anime fans, they absolutely hate when a bunch of guys start reading their series intended for them because they almost inevitably get pushed out of it. Just look at the mahou shoujo genre.

Plenty of "moe" that is seen in anime isn't palatable to most women. But not just any moe, I'm specifically talking about "moeblobs", which showcase barely any discernable facial features aside from the eyes. It tends to look cheap, but pretty, and generally has some glossy overlay. Cgdct is rife with that particular aesthetic. There are some standouts from the genre that can invite a large crowd of women, like Eizouken, but those lack the moeblob aesthetic.
So to have a female-oriented cgdct, one should start by having a design that can actually attract women.

That part is true. I should've clarified that the online definition of "moeblob" also encompasses a personality trait that comes with that cutesy aesthetic, which is a turn-off for many women. But I'm not necessarily sure if the personality is a bigger factor, since many women turn away from cgdct from just the promotional poster though. Could go either way.
