What's the exact reason why modern manga art styles generally aren't as striking and cool to look at compared to pre-2010 series?
I used to think it was the switch to digital and the characters looking more boring and generic, but there's definitely something more I'm missing

prove that you think

Compare this secondary character from Bastard!! to Gojo from JJK to better get what I mean.
Not only left has a better outfit design and is overall more complex than right, the art style seems more interesting and high effort as well without reaching Vagabond/Berserk level semi-realism.

there's definitely something more I'm missing

Yeah, a brain.

Old stuff was inspired by lot's of different sources, including stuff from the west. New manga seems to just be inspired by manga the authors read as kids and nothing else, it makes everything feel derivative and not unique and it's reflected in the art.

To be fair, in Hagiwara's own time hardly anyone drew stuff as cool looking as he did.

because series with too detailed art often don't get anime

Cause jjk is WSJ slop.

They aren't as exaggerated now. more "realism".

comparing dark fantasies to urban fantasies

Come the fuck on man.

Takeru can do kino color pages, it's just that he has to do like 2 color pages every month or so, and a Lead Color Page every 1 and a half to 2 months right now.

That explanation doesn't make sense for the example OP made, Takeru (KGB) is inspired a lot by western movies like John Wick and Batman, most of his inspirations are western actually and not anime.

I can't get over this series's art. The faces always look so lifeless, like they were pasted on or some shit

Hokazono is getting better at faces, this is his first serialized work and he only started drawing manga seriously when he was like 20, 4 years ago.

4 years

can only draw 1 face (barely)

He only got serialized last year anon, he was also an architecture student and not an art student. His backgrounds look nice but his faces leave a lot to be desired, still fine for his 1st work though.

Old stuff was inspired by lot's of different sources, including stuff from the west. New manga seems to just be inspired by manga the authors read as kids and nothing else, it makes everything feel derivative and not unique and it's reflected in the art.

Old Anon Babble posters were inspired by a lot of different sources, including stuff from other forums. New Anon Babble posters can just repeat the same opinions they read as newfags and nothing else.

It's ironic because KGB and Hokazono was inspired by literally everything else besides anime and manga, especially old western movies like John Wick.

used to think it was the switch to digital

There's still a lot of authors working with ink and paper.
You simply don't read enough manga if your best example is Jump shit.

John wick

Old western movie

old western movies like John Wick.

John Wick came out almost 15 years ago anon

I'm a retard as you can guess

15 years ago counts as "old"

Who let the baby grab the phone off the table again?

It was actually ten years. I can see that you are not merely retarded, you are the real deal

It wasn't even full 10 years.

But does it really count as a Western?

I have spent so long pretending to be retarded that it has become the natural state for me...

It was a full 10 years ago, it came out in October 2014. Last month was it's 10 year anniversary.

I assume they mean Western as in "made in US" rather than Wild West.

Not in my time zone.

He probably means "from the West" in this context, but he's proven to be a gigaretard so I wouldn't be surprised if he thought it was a Western.

Authors should base their works on films like The Magnificent Seven or A Fistful of Dollars rather than copying Japanese works.

No I meant "made in the USA" when I said western

Next time say American.

Back then we could treat authors right (as slaves) now they got rights and shit

Everyone in KGB is a soulless spook or career criminal

It's not really fair to compare the average shonen to CLAMP of all things. Even other shojo can look bland next to their artwork.

If you think old manga style was cool, you're retarded. It's not that they're "style" is cool, it's that manga itself is cool so they're accepted by the fans. People will still cosplay them as "manga style" costumes, but honestly speaking, they just look like clowns. I do get your sentiment though, OP. Most modern manga have developed a reductionist style to be cool. Hopefully, when we go to the next stage, we'll now actually have stylish manga thats cool for real, and not the embarassing pants on head retarded style from the previous ages.

comparing soft yaoi to soft seinen

That asides, older art styles are more angular and sharp with matte coloring, contemporary art styles are more round and soft with glossy coloring.

It's not that they're "style"

That explanation doesn't make sense for the example OP made,

It's just nonsense that sounds good, so a lot of people repeat it. In reality, there's not many authors that it accurately describes and almost none that are popular.
