The problem with Part 2 is that the characters don't act like real people. Like, pic rel is an ACTUAL depiction of what grief looks like. Denji crying over Nayuta just doesn't hit the same way this does.

For as much shit as Agni went through, it felt grounded in the context of the setting. And hell unlike Denji, AGNI ACTUALLY HAD AGENCY. He had an awful awful but you know what? No one made him kill Doma and the kids. HE did that. With Denji, every character not sympathetic to him becomes a cardboard cutout because the story wants you to feel sorry for him. And that's why Agni is a way better character than Denji. Because Agni, unlike Denji and Asa, is allowed to be more than just a fucking victim.

I prefer FP's writing with Agni's followers so much more than the CSM Church because Fire Punch has something that Part 2 is in desperate need of: nuance.

Agni's followers are all portrayed as people who are every bit as broken and desperate as Agni. The guy in pic related is an easy example. You can empathize with Agni, but you can also empathize with the people he comes into contact with to varying degrees.
But in Part 2 all the Chainsaw Man fans are almost dehumanized where the story presents them as caricatures of loony fanboys. The same goes for Public Safety despite Part 1 going out of its way to show that Devil Hunters were just normal guys.

I guess I'd say that Part 2 feels overly cynical, but not in a way that feels especially nuanced or engaging.

Denji already went through his low-energy denial phase after waking up, there's nothing that's hard to believe about the way he reacted.

That's really not true at all. The core starting concept of part 2 was him loudly and openly being CSM for sexo, he collected money for Nayuta, his critical transformation in front of the burning house was a major choice and a huge turning point and executed better than Agni killing Doma, he wakes up and insists on searching for Nayuta, insists on sushi, pushes yoru away as she kisses him, and just overcame a key inner conflict largely (though not exclusively) by making a conscious decision about how he wanted to approach life.
Throughout part 2 he's made a lot of important choices and developed as a person.

? No one made him kill Doma and the kids. HE did that.

I actually didn't like that scene, I thought it was a copout for Agni to not be fully cognizant during the massacre.

And going into a PTSD-induced unconscious rage doesn't say nearly as much about someone as the choices they make when they're fully aware and in control of themselves. Hence le kinoface being the better Agni scene.

I think that's an overly simplistic take and her actual feelings are rather complicated. There were definitely elements of malice in her first interactions with denji, which is understandable given how she somewhat blames him for her parents' death.
