The first memory I have of Dragon Ball is randomly watching the episode where Piccolo and Android 17 fight in that island. Why were they so determined to stick with the 5 minutes until Namek blows plot device? This is really the only major flaw with the entire arc. It could have easily been salvaged with Frieza saying he underestimated the strength of the planet and clearly its going to take more time until it blows up. Then the rest of the characters could have sold it by saying it could be any second, minute, hour or whatever was necessary for the drama.
