I really enjoyed the first episode. It's well-paced, the direction is snappy, the visuals are super pretty, and while it uses a lot of CGI for the robots, Khara are still the absolute masters of making giant robots feel like giant robots, with their physicality and sound design. The scene of Zakus fucking up the ghetto neighborhood reminded me of Gundam F91, it was great.
Machu also seems like a really charismatic protagonist.
I still don't really understand where they are going with this story (they're not gonna take down the Zabis in 12 episodes, that's for sure), but we'll see.

Turn A is the answer to both questions, but it's also not the best Gundam to watch without having seen other Gundam shows before. It's probably the worst in terms of being a first Gundam. Most are generally accessible enough, and I say this as someone who started with Gundam ZZ. (The third UC show and direct sequel to Zeta) BUT if I had to decide which series I would recommend people start with, 0079 if you can handle older animation, 00 if you need the shiney, and SEED if you can't handle the very old but can handle the kinda old animation.

Honestly looking back the writing is absolutely not the weakness of this show. It goes a little to shit toward the end because Okouchi obviously had to wrap shit up in a hurry but it's still nowhere near IBO level and is still pretty ok for what it is. I loved the focus on company wars and Guel's character development in particular. The villain is compelling. The romance was extremely boring to me (though obviously not to all) but it still had some pretty great moments, mostly because Suletta is batshit crazy and Miorine finds this out little by little like in a horror movie and the final Jeturk fight was great. Absolutely do recommend trying it out again if you care to.
