Elfen Lied has many flaws, but resonates for me as a work that is Wabisabi or "perfectly un-perfect". It tackles nature vs. nurture, the limits of love and forgiveness, and whether any crime can be redeemed. It gives us morally grey and complex characters like Lucy and Kurama, who do truly terrible things but remain sympathetic. Does it have some pointless gore and nudity that didn't add symbolic or thematic weight? Certainly. Is the narrative a bit rushed and constrained by a 13 episode run time? Yep. Does it use old school melodrama tropes that stopped being used seriously in storytelling by the 1950s? Yep. Despite all of this, it remains my all time favorite, even if there are plenty of better executed anime. It's like X-men meets Crime and Punishment meets batshit insanity. No matter how hated it is here on Anon Babble/, I will never apologize for Elfen Lied.

I don't think anyone hates Elfen Lied, it's unique show for a reason and that's why so many flocked to it originally.
