Is not so much about one specific director like Watanabe being progressive as much as the whole anime industry feeling slop undistinguishable from any other Netflix show.
Lazarus is just the confirmation the industry as a whole is a corpse raiding the good will of the 90s and 00s people had for anime. Down to the endlessly soulless remakes to try and gather a bit of the spark they had. Hell, Lazarus itself is trying to ride the cocktails of Cowboy Bebop, they're using the same setup, the same character cast composition, even the same style of poster and music of Cowboy Bebop. The difference being Cowboy Bebop had beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds instead of CGI, natural but not over-the-top animation, credible characters like Spike with credible conflicts. Now we have some retard jumping through roofs, a girlboss granny, token character and a bunch of fucking underages with the most nonsensical plot ever that the world collapsed thanks to an analgesic.
It's pathetic, but also sad. That veterans of the industry saw this absolute slop and said "hell yeah, let's put on air (stream) this piece of garbage and put my name on it!" speaks of how fucking bad things are. People watched anime to run away from how shitty Western entertainment and art was, but now we're seeing the hollywoodization of anime in real time and is disheartening.
