Can Anyone explain to me why this show was so popular back in the day?

Festival arc is comedy gold, movie slaps, rest is boring as hell.
Some character moments are solid, but Endless Eight is pointless, any decent director would've ended it in 3 eps tops

Every time

the entirety of s1 is 10/10 sol + mystery

No SOL can be a 10/10 unless is Azumanga Daioh

Nagato was very popular. Yeah we were still in that era where most people liked Rei and not Asuka. Different times

Try watching Haruhi in eventual order, endless eight makes sense that way.

Expand, you can't say that and without giving more context

Why?
It won't help you in any way, and you obviously aren't up to changing your mind.
Unless you just want people to discuss the series I guess

E8 was an interesting study on how the exact same script can generate fairly different products just by changing some of the execution.

I was there and even I never got the love. Then again I never did finish the series. I watched maybe 5 or 6 episodes then I just sort of forgot and haven't bothered since. I did enjoy the memes and nico nico videos.

Simple as, it's as anon said.

Expand on huwhat? Nagato Yuki was popular and that made her show popular.

It was a different time, and Haruhi was a revolutionary LN when it dropped. Combine that with KyoAni craftsmanship and a tacit playing in to what otaku liked at the time, and you have a mega hit.

If you have to ask why it was popular, you're too young to get it. And I don't mean this in a "stupid zoomzoom" way, I mean it in a "why did people like this passing fad" way.

What the HECK is the eventual order?

chronological ywdgi

Chronological order is, by far, the WORST way to watch the show, especially if you're watching for the first time

Which shows do you consider good?

E8 was a one of a kind shit. I doubt anyone would try to copy it

Hunter x hunter and one piece

I'm talking about a rewatch

Emission order.

Kyon is one of my favorite characters ever, I also really like Haruhi and Yuki. It has some of the best atmosphere and tone in any anime. The mystery, specially in broadcast order, makes you genuinely feel like the anime is consciously screwing with you. I love it.

I'll emission onto Mikuru's breasts if you know what I mean

Thats just isnt true though, prior to the movie Nagato was nowhere near as popular as Haruhi was, and after it the 2 are pretty much equal in popularity, and this is considering the fact how a significant amount of that popularity comes from people simping for alternate human Nagato, who has a significantly different personality and demeanor from the original alien Nagato.

Also whilst there are definitely a non-insignificant amount of people who like Nagato because they also liked Rei before, there is also a non-insignificant amount of people who like Nagato but dont like Rei at all, myself being one amongst them.

And the reason for that is quite simple, I like Nagato because of the emotional depth and kind of person she is beyond her surface level inability to make emotional expressions, not the aforementioned surface level Kuudereishness, and when you compare Nagato to Rei based on the former instead of the latter, the 2 are very different characters.

Tatami Galaxy is Endless Eight but good.

broadcast order is still the best way. What’s the point of rewatching if you’re viewing the show in a different order?

As someone that was around at the time, I can give a few reasons.
- Solid voice acting and amazing animation for its time (keep in mind this was released the exact same season as Musashi Gundou)
- The non-chronological order it first aired in somehow worked to get people really interested in it
- Cute girls, all with different personality types (Want an outrageous genki girl? Helpless moe? Cool and calm? A loli? It's all there)
- Some really hype moments like the concert in S1
As much as I liked the series though, I won't defend what they did with Endless Eight. I think that was KyoAni being too clever by half. Three, even four episodes would have been enough. I will admit that the way it was done kind of made you sympathize with the characters more, and it was very cathartic when it did end.

hype as an adjective

so this nigger talk is affecting oldfags too

Broadcast order is jumbled, blindfolded and threw a dart on an episode to air.

But cute girls with diffetent personality types is an element that most animes have, even older than Haruhi. Also people seem to forget that broadcast order was done when the second season premiered, the first season was broadcasted noermally.

Themost ironic part is that movie Nagato is a better character than regular Nagato. But you know, Kuuderes are the one those types of characters that even if they are a cliché, they don't get annoying. Also her desing is cute

Why people of that era liked Rei more than Asuka?

"Fairly different" is far fetched

Why was a revolutionary LN? What did otaku liked at the time? Why i am to young to get it? What is the thing i'm not getting about this show phenomenon?

You had to be there. It was massive.

No she isnt? Like did you not read the part of my comment where I said how I like the original Nagato for her emotional depth, something that is only the case if she were a good character?

Which she is, shes an amazing character, and you can ho through the archives to look through some recent threads where me and a few others go over why exactly shes such a good character.

And she isnt a cliche, her character isnt about a non-human learning yo have emotions, its about an essentially neurodivergent human learning how to deal with their feelings of depression, loneliness, boredom and longing of connection with others and the ability to indulge in your passions freely.

Alright, let me try to explain how this show works. I'm leaving a lot out but you can think of it as 3 stories layered on top of each other, all told simultaneously.

Level 1 is the story that's supposedly happening from Haruhi's POV. It's the unironic "Adventures of Mikuru" plot, the stupid baseball underdog story where a high school after-school club beats a college team, or the murder mystery where the crime happens right as the detective shows up. Haruhi tells the level 1 story by dragging everyone else around, because level 1 Haruhi is a *hack artist*. She's every negative stereotype of anime compared to cinema or light novels compared to literature. That's why she's obsessed with showing off Mikuru, for example.

Level 2 is Kyon's narration, and also the whole supernatural aspect of the show as explained by Koizumi. Kyon points out all the problems with the Level 1 story, why it's unrealistic or immoral, and the supernatural stuff "deconstructs" it by showing what would have to be true for it to make sense. There are actually a lot of shows where a character having reality-warping powers is the most rational explanation for what you see happening on screen.

Level 3 is what you get when you apply the same kind of interpretation to level 2, after putting together all the clues and realizing that Koizumi's explanations are full of holes. He says Haruhi was ready to destroy the world because Kyon didn't hit a home run in a mundane baseball game, but since when did Haruhi care about sports? And isn't she supposed to be smarter and more reasonable than that? Or in the school movie episode, when she says the movie is great, are we supposed to believe she couldn't hear Kyon's narration making fun of it? That was part of the movie!

The best explanation is always that Haruhi knows what she's doing. The story she's telling isn't what Koizumi thinks, it's the show you're watching. She likes the movie for the same reasons you did.

Yeah, that's cool and all, but when do I get to have sex with mikuru?

The best explanation is always that Haruhi knows what she's doing. The story she's telling isn't what Koizumi thinks, it's the show you're watching. She likes the movie for the same reasons you did.

the problem with this interpretation is that you have to assume that Haruhi is actually smart.
the one interpretation i like is that it's actually Kyon who is the "god" and not Haruhi, or something like that

I heard that was confirmed in the light novels, like that Kyon is the "author" character with the powers and Haruhi is like a semi-metaphorical "muse", but I'm not sure that works in the show. The big thing is that Haruhi is the one who gets the existential crisis story, so she's the more human character. Kyon is just some guy.

Also Haruhi being smart makes more sense if you understand that Don Quixote is smart. Also she's literally just smart, like good at school etc.

Haruhi is cute

damn

Also she's literally just smart, like good at school etc.

of course, I was just making a joke.
Haruhi being a metaphysical shitposter or whatever makes a lot of sense
