Killing angels solo isn’t a reasonable expectation, Asuka doesn’t even expect that of herself except in the manga. She implodes because she isn’t able to do anything useful for four fights in a row, partially just because of Shinji’s protagonistisms.
She’s actually the only pilot to show any leadership skills in NGE, she’s just flanderized in the other adaptations.
Granted she acts like a dumbass in her first couple of episodes because she’s inexperienced and wants to show up Shinji, but she gets better later on before everything starts blowing up around episode 16.

My headcanon has always been that Asuka did *extremely* will in the simulators at Nerv Germany, and established an expectation of her competence based on those scores, but those simulators were woefully inaccurate when it came to determining Angel powers because no one had ever actually seen an Angel when the simulators were programmed. They just assumed that the Angel would be basically as strong as an Eva was, as point of reference.
So she assumes she will be amazing at real combat because of all of her training, but then in a real fight that training turns against her because it means that all of her reactions are off, actively misinforming her reactions during her fights. But then EoE comes around and she can crush the MP Evas in a 1v9 because this is *exactly* the sort of enemy that she over-trained to beat, right up until the hax powers kick in.

I think there's definitely a Kaji dynamic between Kensuke and Asuka, and that's what they were going for.
Except this time they obviously went a bit further and since Asuka now is mature, so the relationship is one of adults as well.
I also think there's some truth in that one theory that makes Kensuke Tsurumaki's stand-in in the rebuilds. Tsurumaki is a huge Asuka fan so it's almost his self insert I think.
