Denji as a character is contantly plagued by the fact that he was just a much better character back in Part 1, so at best we're hoping to see him come to essentially the same conclusions that it feels like he should have reached back in Part 1 and do essentially the same things he did like overcoming the bad guys...which again, he did it better in Part 1. So Denji is hard capped to at the very best be his Part 1 self, which we've seen already...in Part 1.
I don't even think that Denji was the most interesting thing about Part 1, as shonen protagonists usually aren't, if anything Part 2 is like a scientific paper on why Denji isn't capable of carrying a narrative on his own, the absence of Makima, Aki and Power makes him a significantly worse character. So it is as if he was just running to reach 3rd place...and by the beaten, sickened look of the horse, looks like he won't even reach that.
This just makes Denji a very tiresome character, I can't get invested in anything he does, at the very best it will something that'll make me go "Woo! it's just like Part 1 but worse!".
Meanwhile Asa, the second character with most screen, referred to some as a protagonist as well. She was promising at the start but the story made her character entirely centered around Chainsaw Man/Denji. The fact that the story completely skipped over her development as a devil hunter, church member, wanted terrorist and losing an arm clearly communicate that she holds no importance beyond her relationship with Denji/Chainsaw Man to the story that Fujimoto wants to tell, even more baffling is that her relationship with Yoru is underdeveloped and treated as secondary. Second and third characters with most screen time.
So you have effectivelly...over 3000 pages of nothing but "Chainsaw Man". Part 1 had WAY more stuff going for it than that, Aki's entire character has jack shit to do with "Chainsaw Man" and to some extent even Denji, he is the second character with most panel time.
