I would have made her life shit to drive in that Zeon winning was a bad thing. Make her mom really struggle to provide for Amate. Make the desperation inform why Momchu is pushing her daughter hard to be successful and basically railroading her. This provides the motive for Machu to want to go to Earth and to clanbat. It also adds another layer to her mom issues. Any character deficiencies, and there would be plenty, would still be sympathetic to the audience. It is very difficult to make the audience care for any character if they aren't likable or sympathetic in some ways. Even villains can be likable if they're charismatic and intimidating. Basically, I'm saying do what Trigger did with David in ER (though maybe don't kill off the mom in the first episode).

Some people here are bitching over Machu only being concerned over Shuji and getting him off of Side 6 however why would she have been concerned about Nyaan? In her mind the only one in danger would have been Shuji since she knew that Anki was selling him out, it was also implied to her by one of Anki's lackeys that they where only selling Shuji out and that she and Nyaan would be able to just fuck off from all of this. There was no reason to be concerned for Nyaan at that moment unless Nyaan had told her what happened with the MP's and her home.
