And even then, the scanlator may have worked on manga from different publishers who aren't offering such a waiver, so they're still at risk, and the publisher would be actively encouraging piracy as a job opportunity, which is hard to justify to investors.

You're really overestimating the average reader. Majority of them just reads the new stuff and never goes back to the early volumes.

It was really one of the greatest scanlations I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Scanlation has sort of been a dying hobby anyway since millennials grew out of it and zoomers only consoom. You're right that it's a service issue however I think manga is a bit of an exceptional case because the reality is there is never going to be an official service that matches the sheer convenience of something like Mangadex or any other manga reader site.

You would need to get so many different companies and license holders on board, there's no way something like it could exist at an affordable price. Not to mention all the translations you have to pay for now. I genuinely don't think there's any way for the industry to compete, it would require a complete upheaval about how media works.

There's some truth to it. There's a bunch of series that I jumped on midway because the chapters caught my attention while I skipped over the pages in my mags. I got the early volumes later on but in some cases haven't fully closed the gap.
In other cases there are no volumes to buy despite the series running over a decade. In most of those cases it's series with little overarching plot so it didn't matter as much.

The easy one is to go and buy the book, support the Creator, Company, offical sales numbers.

The broke ass version is you find what you like used in Bookoff or similar places.

Let's use Tokyo as an example works in Osaka too, if you need specific places I'll list em. You find a place thats not swarming with Gaijins but is close to where you live, where prices are for Japanese people. So you don't go to Mandarake Ikebukuro or K-Books Akiba you go to Book of in Ayase, Ogikubo, Kichioji, Kasai, Nakayama, Mizue.

There you will find tons of manga for basically 100 yen a volume. People also sell in bulk so they have the entire series, so they'll package the entire thing for less then 100 yen per volume.

You buy it, get the bigest box from Japan Post, pack it tightly as possible, send it via Seamail and it costs you nothing. Takes 2~3 months to arrive but you don't care.

I would say I did 60% New stuff 40% Used stuff.

It has been done before. Sekai project hired TL wiki who were working on the grisaia fan TL, had them re-release the translations with some adjustments and it's one of the better translated VNs out there.

The manga is individually easy to distribute. What isn't easy is to make all of the 50+ publishers agree on a service where by paying $8 you have access to the full library.

Just think about it. If you can convince 10 people to pay $10 for 10 volumes of manga, you just got yourself $1000. On the other hand, if they could pay $8 to have access to everything, you would need to sell your service to 125 people to achieve the same revenue. Just from this comparison you can see it's at least 12,5x more profitable to keep the current system.

For example. One Piece has sold 523 million volumes globally. For your system to be better they would need to sell the subscription to 6.2 billion people. Is that realistic, anon? See? So long as at least 10% of the consumers are buying it officially, it is still worth not going through all that risky business. AND EVEN IF IT WAS WORTH IT, it's just not feasible. No one has enough contacts to make all publishers come around like that. Japan is very competitive.

Subscription services for manga exist in Japan. These can be based around a single publisher like Comic Days for Kodansha or Comic FUZ for Houbunsha or feature a variety of publishers like Bookpass, Bookwalker or Kindle Unlimited. Notably Kadokawa's magazines are also included on Bookpass and Kindle even though they operate Bookwalker.

There are plenty of decent sites.
I've actually just gone through and found and backed up all my libraries for series that MD removed.
I think batoto and comick had the most content in terms of what I could match up to my MD list though be aware that many of these site use different names, Mangahere and kissmanga were also decent.
Back in the day mangahere was my favorite site but it's gone downhill in the last decade. Mangafreak and weebcentral are also decent.
I wouldn't totally rely on one though, some update slower on some series and faster on others, some are missing specific series. I actually ended up finding a ton of updates on stuff that was dead for months on mangadex on some of these sites so you at least have that benefit.

If you want to limit the future rug-pulling and don't want to deal with potential spam/malware or webui, i'd get a local setup with haruneko and yomikiru where you can just pull updates from whoever has them and keep them locally available.
As a bonus haruneko's adapter list will give you a list of hundreds of manga sites you could use.

Let's be honest, digital only series are seen as second class. Authors agree to it because they don't have much of a choice. Getting a physical release is something they take pride in, notably in female oriented demographics where digital only is more widespread.
Physical only is only a dwindling number of veteran artists.

I don't think the industry is going to do much about how it works except take down the big aggregators and for profit groups in intervals like they've done. I sort of expect the next scanlation hub to be taken down in like 7-8 years or something if it continues the same way.
Like, they're not stupid. They know that fan scanlations have built the community and industry more from scratch. The scanlations are basically free promotion and make them able to make decisions on what to license and publish, giving them less risk. Why would they really want to give that away? They basically have thousands of people working for them for free, and can license and reap the rewards whenever they want.
I don't think much is going to change, expect that a lot of more manga will be licensed and translated with the help of AI/MTL assistance. But still even if they use that, they'll still only cover a fraction of all manga made in Japan, the production is just so ridiculously big and overabundant. I doubt that even with scanlations and official translations that at most 10 percent of manga made are translated, there's a lot and I mean a lot that never see a translation. Look through some magazines and sites that aren't weekly shounen jump or weekly shounen magazine and you'll see what I mean. The vast majority are never available to the general western audience.
Then again you have Sturgeon's law, and most likely most of that is garbage and people only translate the 10 percent that are actually good, but there are some great works that go untranslated for long or forever.

Asking a modern day corporation to actually offer decent customer service these days is way too much.
They would rather nickel, dime, bend you over, etc than give you what you want.

Back in the day people didn't just park on one site, they'd go everywhere, use web searches, and save links to sites they like and people would laugh at anyone who cried about "scanlator rights" and retarded twisted moral rationalization. I read digital but through a tablet. Manwha seems to be extremely popular to kids because they are using phones for everything. I see Japanese people using their phones to read manga, but it is too small for me.

Mangadex could have potential as official scanlation site. Publishers could set prices to untranslated series or offer them in monthly subscription. If the series is too old or forgotten it would be free like the current MD is. Basically: scanlation group translates manga -> publishes it on MD -> if popular series or new, you must pay to read it -> otherwise free (or ads).

Personally I think that MD should be more for untranslated and old series. If you want newer stuff, just pirate it or buy it. Pricing is also important, if the volumes are too expensive no one will buy them. Currently many don't want to buy single volumes or lackluster services which cost like 10+ dollars

Without it other communities with new rules, cultures, and structures, now have opportunities to grow.

From the perspective of the scanlators posting to mangadex if their series is banned now the site effectively is already dead, I doubt most of them are going to suddenly try playing musical chairs and pivoting to a new series that isn't banned, i'm not even sure how anyone would know for certain what they can post at this point since ban status isn't shown on the manga pages and seems to be in flux and the admins are in PR defensive silence mode.

- manga can be read in a standalone client or through a web interface, clients are available for multiple platforms
- good quality scans in different resolutions
- option to switch between different language versions, if they exist, including the original japanese release
- open api that allows you to read your collection through third party clients
- option to simply download the titles I bought as individual images in an archive, pdf, various ebook formats (this entire point is a core feature, non-negotiable. It'll get pirated anyway, so don't make the experience needlessly shit for the actual customers)
- option to switch on a page by page basis between matching pages of the current version of a manga and older versions, if the art (e.g. magazine vs tankobon release) or the translation has been updated over time for the edition I bought
- series sales, volume sales, sales by author, genre, complete your collection bundles, etc. learn from gaming vendors
- discounts if I want to buy new or alternate editions of titles I already have in my library (e.g tankobon vs. bunkobon releases, etc), depending on how much additional work went into a new edition
- community driven tagging system
- extensive search and discovery system
- editorial series/author sections with info on the titles/mangaka, e.g. when were the titles/volumes/chapters released, which magazine was it released in, publicly available author interviews, promotional art, etc.

Make it decently priced and so feature rich and useful that the sheer convenience and having it all in one place makes me want to use it.
