That what I thought it was for the longest time. SubaruxEmilia feels so forced and unnatural because it is. It's fake. And it makes the Rem deal even more tragic, because here's someone he falls for on his own, for real, his actual true love...but lol nah, "I love Emilia." If someone else is selfish, they often get punished or challenged, if Emilia is selfish, it's excused nonsensically by the narrative. Anyone else fights something and they risk dying, Emilia fights the same thing and not a hair on her head will be harmed. A novel development recently is that at least there's an excuse with Al as not only is he not trying to kill anyone he specifically doesn't want to touch or hurt Emilia at all. But even against dragons or other shit outright trying to kill her Emilia won't take so much as even a scratch. Priscilla is literally cheating and has objects absorb damage in her place and she somehow took more damage than Emilia when fighting Madelyn.

Rem doesn't really have anything to do in the big final battle of arc 8 and so, shockingly, she doesn't do much of anything and stays behind. Meanwhile Emilia with no plan or intention at all gets distracted and walks off, runs into the final boss she doesn't even know is the final boss and starts a fight that the narration says is the most important and key thing to ever happen in the whole battle even though Emilia has no idea she's doing that. So Emilia is literally the most important person according to the story on complete accident.
That's Sue behavior, the world is broken around them but behaves logically around everyone else, so the Sue stands out and it hurts the brain of people who pay attention.

Rem started off basically as a bad guy who didn't like subaru, didn't care about saving kids and even killed Subaru a couple times, but after subaru saves her she changes and gets redeemed.

Emilia in comparison never gets put in morally ambiguous situations, she is always the selfless good person who just wants to save everyone. Her hands are always clean, when she fights or kills someone (which is rare) they are super duper evil and she is objectively correct. When people hate her it is because they are ignorant rather than having legitimate moral conflicts with her.
She's kind of like a weaker version Reinhard who is written to be the generic "hero" but even Reinhard occasionally makes tough choices that are debatable like killing his mother.
Compare the way Emilia fights where she is righteous, giving lectures, and will only kill her opponent out of necessity vs Rem's fights against the beasts or cultists were she is full of anger and hatred for her opponents.

For example if Emilia had to actually kill greed's wives to save everyone else that would have actually been good development for her and interesting to see how she dealt with it but the author will never allow something like that because he does not want her to be tainted and imperfect.

Rem can't even do anything relevant. If she was going to she would've shown up as some sort of plan by Roswaal or something and be snuck in reserve when they need something to happen. She's going to have to demand Roi eat her again just to give Subaru a mulligan.
I also don't expect her to do anything cool because Tappei has been writing Rem like Emilia, which is to say dogshit, since shortly after she woke up and I have no reason to assume he'll start writing her well again just because she's technically a more official Rem this time.

And in the end Rem didn't get to do anything with her new outfit, she ended up being returned to her maid outfit without doing anything. And now she's just a mid-ranked character with a relatively low level of strength in the camp who doesn't have much opportunity to do anything.

ofc, for some time, especially after dying, Subaru fears them because it's rather not common for a jap school dropout to be hunted and brutally killed by a cute maid because you acted shady. So what he does it trying to actually proving that he wants to protect the mansion too and pull his weight instead of running his mouth about Emilia. And there whole village stuff happens for him to show that. Like the whole first 3 arcs show that even if someone is nice to him, it's out of curtesy and if he does anything suspicious or dangerous to their lord they'll not hestitate a second to kill him off.
Him dying 1, 10 or 100 to someone he later befriends doesn't matter, because it only show that before friendship, his action was leading to outcome where that person considred him a threat to whatever thing they were doing. threaten kingdom or do some witch tier shit and even Reinhard will chop his head off.

This was originally a discussion about the popularity of Rem vs Emilia, so the point I started off trying to make is that presenting Rem early on as a dangerous potential enemy contributed to her popularity later when she became cutesy and friendly basically via gap moe.
