So I'm trying to figure out what the actual plan here is for the Shi clan. They've infiltrated the palace with spies and assassins, targeting heirs to the throne. This means the emperor's "brother" (Jinshi) as well as any potential male babies from the high ranking concubines. The end result of which would be the emperor dying without a clear heir, and the Shi clan would be in a good position to seize power because of the other part of the plan: stockpiling cutting edge weapons (firearms) and other war materials. The Shi clan seem to have been creating a succession crisis which they would be perfectly placed to take advantage of.
However all the assassination attempts on the current heir (Jinshi) failed. The rear palace spies have had some luck confounding pregnancies, but Maomao started interfering with their operations in a big way. So the plan to remove heirs to the throne wasn't going well. Worse still, their secret stockpiling efforts were uncovered, and the surprise weapon that was supposed to give them an edge against the imperial armies was also revealed. This means instead of a power vacuum decades from now, the war will be imminent, and likely a defensive one for the Shi clan.
So the advantages that the Shi clan currently possess are these 3 things:
1. Feifas. These weapons are powerful, and even if the surprise factor is ruined the imperial soldiers have no experience fighting them. How they are used will be pivotal in the conflict.
2. The mountain fortress. They've built it up for years, it can weather a long siege. They can drag the war out for years.
3. They hold Maomao captive, a potential bargaining chip against Lakan.
This all suggests a shift to a defensive, protracted war, which means the Shi think they can win such a conflict. I'm not convinced, unless there's more information we don't have. like other pressures on the empire that this is going to exacerbate, or another secret advantage we haven't been told about.
