Once Thatch found the fruit, Blackbeard would have had to kill him immediately to steal it, thus forcing him into hiding for however long it took for things to work out.

Had Ace been captured and handed off to the government too early, it's possible that Whitebeard would have been healthy enough to save him, or at least survive the war. So in some weird ways, things worked out to Blackbeard's favor.
