I agree that 14 is old enough to get married, but is that even true? I don't think 14 year olds were considered actual adults. For example, in old greece you had to be 20 (and male obviously) to vote, right? This kind of shows people under that age were not considered full fledged adults. More like, "old enough to marry".

I think you were expected to have an education before you could vote which is why the age was 20 years old, whereas marriage you just had to be physically able to work and bear/raise children.

i think the jewish bar/bat mitzvah shows ancient ideas of adulthood as a religion practiced since antiquity. at 13 for boys, 12 for girls you have a coming of age ceremony where you are now considered responsible for your own actions.

That doesn't prove they were seen as adults, only that they were seen as "old enough to fight/hunt/work". Some might consider this a distinction without a difference but a lot of people had, and even today have, to work and fight at ages even younger than that. Being seen as old enough for specific things and a full fledged adult seem like two completely different things, at least to me.
