We know from G-Reco that they eventually fail in a colossal fuckup that nearly wipes out humanity and renders Earth uninhabitable for a century. It's still far better than whatever the colonies and Jupiter (mostly Jupiter) are cooking up, and a 100 times better than their counterparts in other series like SEED or Wing.

Why an "extraterrestrial biological emergency" instead of clarifying a disease, a virus, complications from living in space despite the colonies, a space alien invasion, etc.? Why did they even think a space-adapted human race might emerge like they'd be distinct from normal humans used to living in space, and why would such an ambiguous classifcation warrant prioritizing their roles in government? If one guy is better at withstanding health impediments from a 0G environment than most people, why he he prioritized for being being a governor? Is a campaign instantly made to put him in a senate or make him the prime minister? Is he qualified for administering the government whatsoever?
