I just posted 50 manga I like. Old things must be looked at more critically than new things, as they are in the greatest danger of being praised simply because they are wrongly viewed as monuments. It's not interesting to me to see the same thing recycled over and over with no new input. And I have no idea what you mean by discerning taste, as I very much doubt you're the connoisseur you believe yourself to be.

This is exactly why it's wrong to blindly praise old things. If you can't make an argument why it's better than it's not. Slayers isn't exactly great either.

I'm not calling dbz great in a writing sense, I'm calling it influential and also groundbreaking for its time. There's nothing blind about praising that about it. Steins;Gate has literally neither of those things going for it so I don't see what the big issue is.

Firstly, this is wrong, as Toriyama did nothing new, he just popularized pre-existing techniques. Secondly, this means nothing for the quality of the anime to the watcher. Really we could argue the whole 3x3 is kind of bad. xxxHolic is nowhere near as good as its manga, for example. (Which is in a symbiotic relationship with tsubasa that elevates it to one of clamps better works) Actually the same could be said for dbz in this regard. I'd say the dbz anime is a 4/10, and the dragon ball manga which encompasses it is a 6/10. Is there any point in watching a 4/10 anime adaptation of a better manga? Arguably, maybe no. But because it aired on toonami people simply blindly overlook that which would be obvious when applied to any other anime.

Uh oh, the jump ape is having a meltdown. And by the way, in comparison to dbz, the xxxholic anime is a 7/10, whereas the manga is an 8/10, so a much smaller gap here. There's no way to argue that dbz is a good anime, all it contributed was the wuxia trope of protagonists screaming at each other for 10 minutes like pro wrestlers while accumulating chi or whatever. That's it's "influence".
