Shinji risking his life to fight angels is heroic and despite him being a coward, he always ends up being the one who saves the day. Whereas Machu's only accomplishment is beating military police in ep 1 and some low-level clan-battle in ep 3. Shuji beat the Witch, Nyan beat the Black Tri-Stars, and Challia beat Deux. That's like making Shinji job against the angels and Rei or Asuka are the ones who save the day. Machu isn't even fighting bad guys in these clan-battles so there's nothing heroic about it. Plus she can leave at anytime whereas Shinji is guilt tripped to carry the burden of all of mankind. So she's neither cool or sympathetic. She's a shit character.
