I'm no expert, but I think tolkien invented elf-dorf hate. Warhammer invented the dorf book of grudges.
The sole instance I remember from his books is when the dwarves were imprisoned by the elves. Not for being dwarves, but for being illegal trespassers.

And where do you think Warhammer got its inspiration from? All high fantasy stories you see today, especially ones with elves and dwarves, were inspired by Tolkien. He literally invented the high fantasy genre.
The Silmarillion really was eye opening. LOTR makes the elves seem like some kind of wise enlightened divine beings, but In the Silmarillion there's no difference between Elves and humans. Every now and then I forgot I was reading stories about elves.
