frieren is pretty much as far away from a girlboss as you can get.
In most other stories she would be a supporting character. I mean she was in the hero party since Himmel was the main leader.
The story choses to focus on her because of the premise of elf outliving their human companions, she takes on an apprentice so kinda fills a yoda or Gandalf type role. She take on Fern because Hieter asked/tricked her, takes Stark with them mainly because Eisen asked her, Sein because they needed a healer but really because she wanted to help him fulfill his dream of going on an adventure.
The people in her party are there because they want to, they all get offered an out and are free to do their own thing but they chose to stay with her or eventually rejoin her. She rarely ever barks orders at them but merely tries to steer them in the right direction in hope they can learn because she has the experience that they don't, when they can do something she's not the best at she is super trusting of them all to do that. She doesn't doubt them.

The Aura arc was 10/10 but the rest was pretty boring. I thought the exam arc was going to be a lot better than it actually turned out to be.
It's one of the rare cases where the anime completely elevates the source material.
