I read posts like these and I'm convinced the manga and anime are utterly incapable of representing the novel.

Obviously it's a very different experience. A core theme, always repeated by Shimamura in her thoughts, is how Adachi acts while Shimamura just thinks, and how much Shimamura admires that, is entertained by it and sometimes even envious. Cut the inner monologue and you're left with something that seems one-sided. Which I think is fine too, but does make it a bit into a "how is Adachi going to suffer today" show.

As a moke-only and anime-only reader, I'd say Shimamura isn't intentionally a bad person. Her actions (or lack thereof) stem from her character flaws and being autistic. Both Adachi and Shimamura are autistic, and I personally relate to them. Sometimes you just don’t know how to feel about a certain event or person, and sometimes you feel detached from everything, as is the case with Shimamura. The fact that the current translated chapters show Shimamura going out of her way to go on a date with Adachi shows that she really does care about her, although she’s still conflicted about some of her feelings.

Wrong, Shimamura at this point knows very well she is in love with Adachi, she just didn't realize how much damage she isn't doing by not putting her shields down yet.

But Shimamura herself is a nasty character who is disliked by a lot of the people she meet.

I'm doubtful about how much Shimamura's aware of her feelings for Adachi. Right now, it's like, "Adachi's in love with me, how do I even deal with this? I don't know, so I'll just take a tiny step and see." That looks damaging to their relationship to us. Adachi's persistence is the main thing driving their relationship at this point. As for whether people Shimamura meets hate her, the manga barely shows her interacting with anyone besides the few named characters, so it's hard to tell. Shimamura's not a bad person, just a flawed one, since guilt depends on whether it's intentional or not. I guess the story's current point is for Shimamura to eventually get it and make up for it. Does Adachi deserve better? Hard to say, since she doesn't seem interested in meeting anyone else, just like Shimamura. If they hadn't met, I doubt Adachi would be with anyone ("If They Hadn't Met on the Gym's Second Floor").

I never thought I'd say this about a yuri series, but both Adachi and Shimamura don't need each other, they need fathers. Neither of them respect themselves or anyone around them. If Adachi respected herself, she would have ditched Shima as you say.
