That whole arc with the dog just made it seem like Shima felt some obligation to tell herself that she should be feeling things and then started going through the motions. Her telling off Tarumi the way she did before the festival was pretty mean, too. She acts like a princess or the daughter of a billionaire or a robot or something. Maybe the LN is different but the manga did a terrible job of convincing me that she's a human being. The tragic thing is that it is still totally reasonable to me that Adachi would become obsessed with her, despite Shimamura's "personality." Adachi really deserves better IMO

As a moke-only and anime-only reader, I'd say Shimamura isn't intentionally a bad person. Her actions (or lack thereof) stem from her character flaws and being autistic. Both Adachi and Shimamura are autistic, and I personally relate to them. Sometimes you just don’t know how to feel about a certain event or person, and sometimes you feel detached from everything, as is the case with Shimamura. The fact that the current translated chapters show Shimamura going out of her way to go on a date with Adachi shows that she really does care about her, although she’s still conflicted about some of her feelings.

Wrong, Shimamura at this point knows very well she is in love with Adachi, she just didn't realize how much damage she isn't doing by not putting her shields down yet.

But Shimamura herself is a nasty character who is disliked by a lot of the people she meet.

I'm doubtful about how much Shimamura's aware of her feelings for Adachi. Right now, it's like, "Adachi's in love with me, how do I even deal with this? I don't know, so I'll just take a tiny step and see." That looks damaging to their relationship to us. Adachi's persistence is the main thing driving their relationship at this point. As for whether people Shimamura meets hate her, the manga barely shows her interacting with anyone besides the few named characters, so it's hard to tell. Shimamura's not a bad person, just a flawed one, since guilt depends on whether it's intentional or not. I guess the story's current point is for Shimamura to eventually get it and make up for it. Does Adachi deserve better? Hard to say, since she doesn't seem interested in meeting anyone else, just like Shimamura. If they hadn't met, I doubt Adachi would be with anyone ("If They Hadn't Met on the Gym's Second Floor").

I like it when it's as equal as possible. Ideally, one character will pursue the other really hard for a while the other doesn't fully realize the first one's feelings. Then, the one pursuing will take a break for whatever reason, (maybe self doubt, maybe giving up, maybe a rival comes in and distracts her), which triggers the one initially getting pursued to realize she's in love with the other girl. Then, the roles get inverted a bit and then these inversions become more frequent until, eventually, a confession happens from either one. One of my favorite parts of the girl girl dynamic is that neither of them are necessarily shoehorned into top/bottom uke/seme masculine/feminine role. It's nice when they both go after each other.
