The fact that Deux was a cybertype was probably why she became so addicted to kira-kira to begin with.

Think about it. Raised in a lab, undergoing painful and mindscrewing procedures. Nobody loves you. You are indoctrinated to be a perfect little tool. The failures are disappeared, never to be heard from again. You don't remember the sun or having a family, unless you're one of the few fortunate ones like Four. And then, you find kira-kira, and for once in your life, you feel freedom. You feel a connection to others. You feel bliss and like there's something worth living for.

From the character and design hints we get, I actually think Deux has it way worse than any of the other UC cybertypes we've seen (look at attached jpg). They at least seemed to have some aspirations outside of Gundam. They at least look like healthy people on the outside. Deux doesn't even have that, meaning that she was probably taken in very early, and the experimentation was far more severe.

But none of this will be obvious to newer fans, because they're missing all the context.

Honestly, I do think that Shiko having a backstory that gives plenty of information while also keeping enough a mystery to make people care, a proper motivation, and a character arc despite being a character that will die in the same episode she was introduced does show that Deux could have more going on. I disagree. I think the lack of reaction from Challia and others, and the way the anime jumps right to the next scene, shows that you're not really intended to feel sad about Deux's death. I wouldn't say the scene was very somber, more like action-packed. Machu almost shooting Annqi, Machu going through kira-kira withdrawals and getting captured by Zeon, Shuji abandoning Nyaan, or Nyaan saying she has nobody else is treated as "sadder" by the framing and music choices, which is laughable to anyone who knows anything about Masamune.

This anime really needed to be 24 episodes long. Right now, it feels like they're trying to do a hamfisted metaphor of the kira-kira being a drug, like literally a drug, which is absolutely the dumbest metaphor you can make about newtypes and experience a newtype flash.

Machu's the rich kid who first tried a drug because she has a crush on a stoner. Then her life went spiraling as she kept making awful decisions for the drug and the stoner. Nyaan's somebody whose life is terrible and finally found a drug that makes her feel free, but turns her violent. Shuji's a hippie hobo stoner artist who seems to be more in tune with the drug than with the world. Deux is a lifelong addict whose supply was abruptly cut off and went berserk.

It could have worked somewhat if we know those characters well outside of the Gundam. However, I felt like we literally don't know much about most of these characters that when their life went spiraling it's hard to empathize.

This show sucks ass at character writing because it's so rushed. We don't have to have a clanbat every episode, we could stop to do some character and setting building, because this really needs it. The last episode in particular was particularly rushed, having two parallel plots that never really intersect. The only character moment that felt earned all episode was Machu finally passing the point of no return. This has been built up well and feels deserved with the progression of the story up to this point. But nothing else has been.

Deux going batshit crazy like all Cyber Newtypes in previous Gundam anime felt like it was done out of obligation and was comically rushed, and then used so Anno could wank himself off by turning it into basically an Eva. And then they killed her off in her very first fight scene with ridiculous ease, just showing that her existence was completely pointless nostalgia bait. It still leaves me feeling upset. I have to hand it to them, you don't expect a waifish depressed looking kid type character to be used in the role that she was used in.

Nyaan being so attached to Shuji after interacting with him in one episode - with that "interaction" basically consisting of using him and his Gundam as a meat shield - felt incredibly forced to try and wring an emotional moment out of Shuji disappearing into the "Kira-Kira" (they really laid it on thick with that "emotional" vocal song over this bit). They're really, really desperate to try and force a love triangle there, with Machu also having feelings for Shuji, but at least she's interacted with him more than once.

Moving onto Zeta references before showing Ramba Ral will be the greatest sin this show commits

The Titans episode would have been the "oh shit moment," when the first present day deaths start happening, and would have indicated that the "fun" high times are over, now it's time for depression.

And I don't think it was necessary to expand the relationship between Machu, Nyaan and Shuuji when at this point it's clear that the idea is that it was a fake relationship where they failed to understand each other, then Machu will re-evaluate her own point of view and and then when she faces Shuuji and Nyaan again she will actually try to understand them. I don't think extended the "fake" is necessary and I'm honestly not the biggest fan of stories doing that. Like when DarliFra spent 15 episodes on them fighting the Klaxosaurs that were actually good guys. I get your point of view on Deux, but I think she was more of a cautionary tale of what happens to kids when they're carelessly used as tools by bad adults.

Tomino probably already had wacky hijinks in mind when working on ZZ so the Zeta cast had to go I think.

Shiiko had a cool little self-contained story, dropped hints about the red Gundam, showed that there was more to Shuji than just some aloof sexy stoner hobo, resonated with the themes of Gundam (war bad) and character development of Machu, and was the first kill we got. I liked her and think she was effectively used to the best extent possible for her character. I wish I could say the same about Deux. As for Gates, he's in Zeta, and he's kind of a smug jerk there.

This is just such a weird writing choice. I genuinely thought that Machu would go "Oh no my Mom might die" and end up fighting the Psycho Gundam. Instead, Challia Bull resolved the whole thing, and he did so more-or-less effortlessly.
I mean, it makes sense - he's probably the best pilot in the entire show and we've seen him arrange for his Mobile Armor to be delivered - but it's like if the monster-of-the-week was defeated by some other dude while the protagonist wasn't even involved.

Khara has also been working extra-hard on something since the past 3 episodes were by Sunrise while Khara worked in the last 4. They haven't said an episode wouldn't be double length so there's a change at least. Even still, once we get some Shuji backstory (probably during an insane three way Kira Kira session with his girlfriends), it makes more sense to go into the final act.

At the same time, I completely believe that we have to get to earth. Makes sense for them to meet there in an S2 or something.

It's an interesting third path that Bandai Namco can abuse now. After the two Hathaway movies and maybe Crossbone (lol), what else does UC have without Tomino? With this alt-UC timeline, we could get more interesting what ifs or continue to build on the GQX UC timeline.
