She's not fighting bad guys or doing something for the greater good. It's all selfish and superficial motives like going to earth, getting a boyfriend, and kira-kira drug fix.

Call me corny or old fashion, but I like seeing the protagonist be special or be the one who saves the day. Machu beat the MP in ep 1 and a low ranked clan-battler in ep 3. Every other episode it was someone else beating the villain of the week like Nyaan beating the black tri stars, Shuji beating the Witch, and Bull defeating Deux.
I'm not a Nyaan fan but she would have objectively made for a better protagonist since she has a tougher background.

Shinji's life was awful, his mother is dead and his father is abusive. The audience wants Shinji to succeed, whereas Machu is a spoiled upper middleclass girl with a loving mom and is popular at school. If Machu is in danger the audience will conclude: "play stupid games, win stupid prizes."
Shinji is guilt-tripped into saving the world. He is a coward yet heroically overcomes his fear to save humanity. Machu is only piloting for selfish reasons like getting a boyfriend and Kira-Kira high. The people she fights in the clan-battle aren't even bad so she's not battling for the greater good like previous Gundam protagonist.
Shinji's teammates are jobbers, so he's forced to be clutch against the angels. Machu only has a single win against military police in ep 01, Shuji defeated the Witch, Nyaan defeated the Black Tri-Stars, and Bull defeated the Deux. Machu is not even needed in the story thus far.
