Scanlation Killer Emaqi has been released on phones

Let's face it, this company is going to kill scanlations like crunchy killed fansubs. How can you deal with someone who uses AI and MTL to make official releases in minutes?

emaqi.jpg - 552x885, 149.22K

mobile shit

Give me a proper website to read on my computer

will zoomer give a shit? no lmao they literally dont know any better those soulless freaks
will the rest of the (normal) people? once they notice the unavoidable AI fuck ups

You've been able to use it on your pc for close to a year or something though.

will the rest of the (normal) people? once they notice the unavoidable AI fuck ups

They proofread and quality check several times so the fuck ups should probably not be bigger than you usual official release.

$11 a volume

Why do people think selling manga digitally is a good idea, who would pay for this?

Paying for MTL

Normalfags wouldn't actually do this, right?

This is the true reason they’re killing mangadex, to flood the market with AI/MTL assisted official releases. It’s Sheuisha killing batoto because they were releasing manga plus all over afain.

human constantly fuck up and make mistakes, AI even more so
and to proofread means you have to understand japanese otherwise all youre doing is check for spelling mistakes which is literally pointless
the earlier named zoomer that literally dont know how to pirate if you dont tell them a direct http link

Normalfags wouldn't actually do this, right?

Normalfags genuinely don't care as long as it's readable.

and to proofread means you have to understand japanese otherwise all youre doing is check for spelling mistakes which is literally pointless

People don't really care all that much if what they read is perfectly correctly translated, they mostly care about that it's readable and fluent.

they don care if what they read is accurate they only care if its readable at all

god i love human brainrot that the iphone started

Machine translation

Trash, still better that the average scanlation
People really don't know how much scanlations are made by people who are either themselves only learning Japanese and do it as a learning exercise, or because they themselves want to read the title they are translating and aren't good enough to just “read” it so they make an English version they can read with a lot of guesswork in it. It's so blatantly obvious how much of it is guesswork and even what their thought process was and why they arrived at their conclusions despite being wrong.

Most scanlations should really be called guesslations. I think MTL is better than the average scanlation translator honestly, at least if they do MTL properly.

As evidenced by the fact of how horribly inaccurate most scanlations are and that even official subtitles with the Japanese audio under it containing many mistakes and of course highly liberal choices.

People don't notice, people don't care and the people with Japanese good enough to spot it aren't reading translations anyway.

Finally some smart people that are Pro MTL and against tranny scanlators.

Most people paying for this stuff do not give a fuck. Have you seen crunchyroll and amazon typesetting? All it has to do is merely look reasonably correct.

Plenty are by people that know neither English nor Japanese.

paying for this stuff do not give a fuck.

people paying for this do not care which is they they decided to shell out a lot of money for it? say it aint so

If there isn't a website version I don't see it actually killing scans.

gueslation

Yeah, this is really what is going on an awful lot of the time. It's so obvious they're constantly just guessing from the images and the parts they do understand.

Picrel is hilarious

Chibi: pure guesswork, every other line is completely misconstrued

Cotton Candy: Okay, I don't agree with the phrasing and the tone of the most of the lines but at least the translator demonstrates understanding the grammar and is in the right direction about “ものか” where Chibi completely fucks it up

I'm not pro MTL, I said it was trash. I'm just saying that most scanlators aren't really translators; they're beginning students of Japanese.

lol_chibi.jpg - 2201x4312, 2.91M

I was talking about

once they notice the unavoidable AI fuck ups

no one will care that a letter is slightly smudged somewhere

Finally some smart people that are Pro MTL and against tranny scanlators.

Being against MTL at this stage is honestly retarded. If you do it correctly you probably only have like one or two mistakes in your script, which is usually either due to handwritten text, or misinterpreting the wrong kanji. In most cases not vital mistakes that ruin the reading experience, and that can be easily figured out by a proofreader.
The issue is that you have to translate the entire chapter script in correct order to get it right, preferably double checking google lens if you're using manga ocr for handwritten text. The MTL people complain about are the ones that barely are editing it afterwards.

slightly smudged somewhere

then they have unironically negative standards. even the average retard has SOME type of standards, no matter how low. paying for literal easily to spot fucks ups like this of "professional" work is beyond inhuman and brain rotten.
and yes im serious but feel free to argue against me because youre being paid and are shilling for this horrendous garbage.

If there isn't a website version I don't see it actually killing scans.

There's been a website version for almost a year. The phone app was released today.

Being against MTL is honestly retarded

based based based based

No, machine translation is terrible and misses so many nuances.
It's just that human translators in this world are even more terrible and just in general no one here cares about nuance or accuracy.
When people here say “faithful” they mean leaving a bunch of meme honorifics untranslated and mistranslating the Japanese word for “cartoon” to “anime”.

Most human translators don't pick up on contrastive-wa, machine translation doesn't pick up on contrastive-wa and other such things. The name of the game in this world is and has always been a very liberal translation that doesn't remotely capture the tone and vibe of the original lines and what it's trying to emphasize or where the focus of the sentence lies.
I take it we can for instance agree that:

I knew it, this is where it was!

I finally found it!

Are two very different sentences. Now imagine that Japanese sentences that map closely to the above are freely translated to the last all the time. That's how this game works in this land. There's a big fucking “やっぱ” in the original which was a nuance similar to “I knew it...” in English as in it indicates the speaker had a hunch which was confirmed in this context but it's very frequently just ignored.

And Machine translation doesn't do this either.

Man it feels good to actually be fluent in French. The BD releases of Japonese manga over here are actually good quality and arent Amerifat retard priced.

I knew it, this is where it was!

I finally found it!

MTL

10.99 per volume instead of a monthly subscription

Asking for pronouns when signing up when that would alienate half of manga readers who don't like that shit

Even with the MTL, if they made it 10.99 per month then it could stand a chance at being the fabled scanlation-killer. But even 10.99 would likely be too much for people used to free scans to stomach, hell no one even uses VIZ's subscription despite it being like 2 dollars and having a good number of titles.

what is their line up?

“I knew it” has no meaning in English.

Yeah, this shit is why all these translations are absolutely terrible.

They're not. The second second would typically be used when someone has been searching for long and found it by chance without expecting it to be there. The first sentence is always used when the speaker expects it to be there and deliberately searched that place. That's what “I knew it” means, the “finally” is also pulled out of thin air. There is no suggestion in the original line that the speaker took a long time. But they very frequently just pull words like “finally” out of their arse in translations as well, often even when the context itself implies it didn't take a long time at all.

I don't think scanlations are so spread out as you think, especially now that they're taking mangadex down.
The $2 and $3 subsciption at viz and manga plus are not sustainable and they're losing money. Most likely they're not going to keep this model for long. If the keep a subscription model, it's likely be more at the same price as bookwalker, which is $6-8, which still is cheap.
The sad thing about scanlations is that it has made people feeling entitled to read manga for free.

I can't imagine how arrogant you have to be to even consider taking payment for MTL. You are copy-pasting from one box into another, there's absolutely no work involved that warrants any kind of payment.
The sad thing is that software like online translators or LLMs have enabled the absolute dregs and the retarded trash with no skills to shit all over people's hobbies in pursuit of money or even worse, just because they can. This timeline just keeps getting worse.

They have proofreaders, both one for English and one proficient in Japanese, that goes through the translations you doofus.

The sad thing about scanlations is that it has made people feeling entitled to read manga for free.

No. I don't pay because all the sites are shit to use and translation quality is not guaranteed. Viz has a history of ass translations that don't even allow swearing. So why would I pay for crap when I can get a better experience for free?

never even heard of it.

Oh.

fuck you too.jpg - 461x338, 78.23K

Does this Iraqi app have Prisma Illya as part of its classics?

Just use a free vpn like proton to enter it. You might have to switch servers a couple of times to get a US one though.

As usual the same old rules still apply: Have a better service(not price) than the others, price can only compensate for how trash your service is.
Give people better translations than others
Give them easier access (price, general platform accessibility)
Give them them a LOT more content than all the others do.
Make sure your platform has a far better interface and all the others (see netflix).
Yeah well I doubt they have the license for all their MTL trash for all over the world so this ads up.

279165233

Doesn't matter how often you post the same marketing bullshit it doesn't matter so stop trying shill.

They know that thirdies just pirate anyway so they don't need the app.

AOC in Iraq is 9 year old but I don't think they tolerate softcore pornographic works with lesbian bait.

Ah yes, two people proofreading machine translations for 13 thousand volumes.

Doesn't matter how often you post the same marketing bullshit it doesn't matter so stop trying shill.

What are you on about? This is the first time I've ever heard about this app. I thought this was the first thread about this shit anyway as again, I've never seen it before.

Shut up shill I don't care. Shill your AI trash on Anon Babble or Anon Babble where it fucking belongs you pest.

Nvm discard my post I misread the number and thought it was replying to me. A consequence of it being linked incorrectly. As a side note, it is nice that I got trips twice in a row sequentially though.

innitschizo arguing with AIjeets

Why can't we just have normal people doing translations

Jokes on you because they have additional AIs proofreading!

Yeah, I did. That fucking retarded place doesn't even seem to have a search function, so it's hard to see what they even have.

If you can't read on it for free on chapter to chapter basis, then it's garbage

Why can't we just have normal people doing translations

You know that there's no mentally healthy people working on scanlations, right? There's a reason they're working on scanlations in the first place.

Yeah, I did. That fucking retarded place doesn't even seem to have a search function, so it's hard to see what they even have.

Most likely most of the stuff they have are going to be sold through stores like bookwalker international and kobo and not their own store.

Then whats the fucking point of this thread?

Then whats the fucking point of this thread?

My guess is that it'll take a while before we get there, and until then their work is only available in their own store. But all the big publishers have their official translations over at bookwalker for instance.

That's an ass argument when scanlations have no quality control and are MTL assisted or driven half the time anyway

Publishers spent a combined 20 million on this instead of trying a big subscription model

If they were going to burn money they should have at least done it in a way that would've gotten more people reading their manga and becoming invested enough to buy books

GUYS LOOK AT THIS MTL TRASH THAT HAS THOUSANDS OF MANGA!

by the way its NA only, has no search, we have no idea wht they ACTUALLY have and arent faking to shit for cheap clout or if any of this trash is even real

the absolute fucking state of this goddamn board and its shills

Only if I gave money to scanlators which I don't. I value low quality work at $0. If publishes want my money then they need to provide a quality service.

That's an ass argument when scanlations have no quality control and are MTL assisted or driven half the time anyway

It's also a pretty fallacious argument. Why should he buy a shitty car when he can just steal a porsche.

If Japanese want western money, then they can just release their magazines translated over here. On second thought however, don't do that. It would be disastrous if any old redditor or discord kiddie could flip open a magazine and see everything Japan regularly produces. Let them stay blissfully unaware of the cool stuff in their shonen echo chambers.

why buy a car (no matter the quality) when you can just steal or MTL (also free) it?

What about 3D printing a Porsche?

It kills the readers? I'm scared

Do people actually believe this

ESLs can.

When you die in the game you die in real life

Emaqi - Emma qill - Imma kill ya!

2 more weeks. Just 2 more weeks and AI will stop being a fucking embarrassment. This time for realsies.

just realized the only scanlator I ever donated money to was one that used machine translation

I think it was because it was a manga I wanted badly enough that I actually learned to typeset and mtl'd and did a couple chapters myself, I planned to do the whole thing but I never got around to it and it was very tedious and difficult and took me many hours just to do those two chapters.

So, I knew firsthand and personally in that case the amount of effort he had to have put into it and I was also very grateful to finally have the series translated when it was done. I was also surprised she even finished it.

Sorry to all the other scanslations I read that I didn't donate to.

TRUST THE PLAN, ANON!

release their magazines translated over here

WSJ already did it before, but it was unprofitable, so it was discontinued.

she

I can make a cleaned, AI redrawn, and MTL translated chapter in like 30 minutes or so. As long as there's not a lot of handwritten text and I skip the sfxs.
Then again automatic AI readers like cotrans and ichigoreader can do it in less than 2 minutes.

Can somebody add Emaqi to the Daiz list?
Daiz is definitely behind killing scanlation.

This is the scanlation thread of this week, right?
Anyone want to translate Itoko no Ko?
Lovely country bumpkin loli and blood related incest.
Five chapters behind raws, they're already cleaned and a typesetter is ready.

Probably can't be done properly with MTL though because of the accents.

please do not attract AI cucks to that thread what hte fuck is your problem

There's probably a lot of translators in this thread because they're the ones that get mad about AI and MTL.

ai

Good luck getting any consistency from chapter to chapter.

This is a fucking ad.

Tablet

This is a fucking ad.

Everyone in this entire thread is trashing the company.

Nips fell for the NFT grift hard so I'm not surprised the publishers have fallen for the "promises" that AI shillers have whispered in their ears.

What gave it away, the constant support posts defending it? The baltant shill ad posting across boards?

The baltant shill ad posting across boards?

Across boards? I've only posted it here.

Posts calling out entitled pirates for being retards aren't posts supporting this shit AI scam

Posts calling out entitled pirates for being retards aren't posts supporting this shit AI scam

Honestly there's little else than manga that is completely retarded to pirate, because a manga getting axed or not is directly dependent on sales. So pirating manga kills it.

Well I was also trying to sorta use it as a learning experience while I did it too, so I transcribed the text manually in a script, which yeah was stupid in hindsight.
Then plug into deepl, google translate, ichi.moe, use my brain a bit.
The hardest part ironically enough, was actually making it sound like natural English, while somehow retaining the exact structure that was in the Japanese. I was probably too autistic about it.
There were lines I would spend an hour on to get right, when I went back to read it later it still sounded off.
It was very simple dialogue though, even I could read maybe about 50% with my Japanese knowledge at the time.

Then was learning to use photoshop and redraw. Yeah I paid attention later and realized most people dont redraw to that extent. You just put the text on a white background and call it a day. Or smudge the background with the jpntext. No one is zooming into the detail that I was redrawing it, or even lingering on the line for more than 2 seconds.

And then was learning to typeset. I still don't know how you're really supposed to know what font to use. I ended up using wildwords for basically everything.

This was preGPT btw.

Today, yeah if I were to try again could probably do everything in half an hour, and basically all of that will be typesetting. I wouldnt bother to scrutinize whatever LLM spits out though unlike before. Well I would still pass it through 3 different ones and have it explain the text to me so I can notice anything off. So maybe it'd take longer than an hour.

I kinda want to try it again but the manga I'd want to do this time is a josei and the text is like nothing but kanji, unlike the last which was very simple shonen dialogue.

My recommendation if you decide to start up again is using panel cleaner.
github.com/VoxelCubes/PanelCleaner
It's pretty decent on all the normal text, and you can order the text afterwards so you get everything in the correct order. Then you can run everything through chatgpt or gemini or whatever at once, which gives a far better result than using google translate or deepl on only one page.
It's kind of crap on handwritten text and skewed text, so there you'll probably need to have google lens/translate to help out

For redrawing you've always had content aware fill that's an awful good help in photoshop, but now you also have AI generative fill. Free programs like IOPaint can be really helpful there, and works wonders on manga.
iopaint.com/
Otherwise for typesetting you can use helpful plugins like typer tools, but it doesn't work on the usual pirated versions of photoshop (cs6 and cc15) so I haven't really tested it out.
I'd just check out that josei with panel cleaner, run it through chatgpt, and see what you get. Chances are that you actually get something fairly decent compared to what you used to get.

可哀想にEOP達。状態は毎日悪化しているね

I've debated so many translators who actually believe sentences like that are the same. These people just don't have a very precise way of thinking or something and just in general don't choose their formulations carefully to express themselves.

Ehh, I once even spoke with a native speaker who insisted that “What are you grumbling about?” and “Why are you grumbling?” meant the same thing who even got cocky and was like “Native speakers can tell these two sentences mean the same thing.”.

Of course they don't, “Because I thought no one would be listening.” is a perfectly good answer to the former, but not to the latter.

unironic AI thread

and here I thought I escape this trash when I left Anon Babble and Anon Babble behind
guess Anon Babble isnt much better afterall

Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of AI artwork or whatever, but translation is far less of a creative field than all anything truly "artistic", no matter what translators might want you to think.
I think it's an inevitable technology, and it will son get to be 100% as good as full human translation, and if that speeds up and expands the number of niche translated works available, I see it as a fully positive thing.

I'd agree if translating was always without fault, which it fucking isn't, especially not when complex languages are concerned like japanese
If this was about french to english or some shit then sure

buy a fucking ad faggot. i can already get digital manga directly from the JAPANESE publishers official apps (kadokawa bookwalker, square enix mangaup, shueisha mangaplus, kodansha kamanga).

I shan't. We've long shunned shit, we won't stop.

I didn't realise the First World consists of only North America, my mistake.

Remember to get the scanlation school font pack.
quicksandscans.wordpress.com/resources/
It's under fonts.
There are so many better fonts than wild words.
For josei I'd probably recommend something like CC Victory Speech lower case for main dialogue.
If you get stuck with a translation, using live translation tools like ichigoreader and cotrans might also be of help. Though with ichigoreader you can only translate 20 pages a month or something like that for free. And cotrans is usually busy so you'd have to install it on your pc most likely, and it's kind of hard to do that. It's kind of random what times it's busy though.

AI has already entered "Leaps Upon Leaps" age.
Remember, for exemple, that things like automatic closed captions, auto-identifying text on an image and auto-translations used to be total fucking laughable crapshots not even 4 years ago, now they are far more relayable today.
Seeing as progress is only gonna accelerate, in another 2 to 4 years, I can see them already being the norm and barely distinct.

Yeah same for making images, video, music, speech or everything at the same time
doesnt change the fact that LLMs are in a bit of a weird state currently. im hopefully that things will improve but not in the short term, and cloud shit is fucked in other ways entirely

Emaqi has probably a completely automated translation tool that makes you only need to proofread. The only public similar ones now is cotrans, and it has pretty garbage translation and redrawing. To improve it, it should use OCR on the text like panel cleaner, make a mask, and only redraw that mask with AI generative fill. Otherwise it should translate the entire chapter as a script and not page by page, and in correct order. That gives a far better result.
All of this should be fairly easy to do as you have all the modules you need to do it (panel cleaner with automatic cleaning, making masks) and AI generative fill like lama and the automatic typesetting in cotrans, all which are open source.
Anyone could probably sit down and make this automatic scanlation tool. It's probably not hard. All the pieces have been made already. It's only about piecing them together.

he doesnt know

I fucking wish I could be as hopeful as you're, iraqi shill-kun

entered

it just exited bro. Time for AI winter.

Bro just give AI the entire things it will improve things

Correct, but consider this

ALL the fucking models lie and cheat to hell on their tests and even more so on their "Context Length" which is supported

64k models only support 4-8k at most without dropping quality sharply

bigger models are even fucking worse

Talking about tools is great but fucking pointless when you fucekrs dont even know the basics

killing dex so they can charge ten bucks for an mtl chapter

The patreon sea groups are now in full control

I don't think those groups care much about being banned from mangadex any more.

blatant shill thread

blatant ad thread

blatant AI off topic garbo thread

still up

god I love Anon Babble
Never did to begin with, theyre all subhuman anyway

Preemptively rolling on the waifu roulette

You should've known there's no escape from the machines.

official mass MTL sloppa discouraging everyone else from ever doing proper translations again, official or otherwise

This is legitimately infuriating.

This is legitimately infuriating.

It's crunchyroll all over again.

It is morally correct to pirate MTL'd manga that these fucks would charge you to read.

It is morally correct to pirate manga

ftfy

Come on. It's only use is translating obscure hentai.

is the joke that he burned the food or something

Come on. It's only use is translating obscure hentai.

it's pretty absurd how much of sadpanda that is only either AI generated images or MTL scanlated hentai (poorly rough translations)
if you'd said that ten years ago I'd never believe you

I wouldn't know.

How far we've come.

Good, if you still unable to learn the language after viewing their media for so many years then you deserve all the shit you can get.

Thankfully I've been learning Japanese and reading more and more in it. There's been a couple series I was reading translations for recently that went to actual MTL that said it was as much. At that point I just switched over to Japanese and will continue to learn through reading like that.

I feel like looking through these chapters to find where the AI begins to be completely pants on head retarded could be fun though.

why don't those glorious nippons make their manganmore accessible if they don't want me to pirate

*publishers make manga more accessible by releasing an app*

NOOOOOO NOT LIKE THAT

someone who uses AI and MTL

But I hate auto-generated machine translations and never read them.
It even killed my WN/LN hobby, because 80% of those are auto translated, so you literally have to sift through sewage to find something readable. The cherry on top, among the rare books that get a decent translation 90% are garbage anyway. So basically, for every 100 books you try, 2 will be okayish.
TLDR: FUCK MTL TRANSLATIONS, AND FUCK WHOEVER IS FLOODING INTERNET WITH THAT SHIT.

Most "fan scanlations" are MTL anyways.

AI is great so long as they aren't using outdated trash.

You don't pay $11 per volume for MTL scanlations even if that is the case.

No but you should since stealing is wrong.

Just pirate them. Someone would scrape Emaqi's contents if they became successful.

How do you steal glorified Google Translate?

AI translation

lol

Feel free to buy the raws and google translate it yourself then. The author would be getting an even bigger cut in that case. But you won't because what you want is free shit even when it's directly killing the industry.

Lemme tap the sign.

Companies don't fucking learn.

But I just bought some (Japanese) manga recently. Still waiting for it to be delivered though. Bought one of Eguchi Hisashi's artbooks too. It's a fair question though, just like all the copyright infringement stuff surrounding AI. Even if it's a proprietary model it's still trained on other people's shit just like all AI models. If the people running the models are committing copyright infringement then it seems strange to be such a corporate bootlicker like you.

We had WSJ and some Shojo magazines like Nakayoshi long time ago in Indonesia and only girls bought them.

Congrats then, you're one of the small 1% of people who actually buy stuff. If the majority were like you we wouldn't have to deal with AI cost cutting corners to begin with. No publishing company is ever going to bother putting out a high quality products when the majority of the userbase just pirates everything for free and never buys anything.

If it is done with at least 2 of the following:

faster

more accurate

without MUH INSERTED PROPAGANDA

Yeah, I see poeple coughing the dough. But we would lose some precious context and translator notes that give you extra context,
Translators, the professional ones, had onlu ONE fucking job, to do a correct and accurate translation, but nooooo, some of them could not resist inserting shit / doing lousy jobs / bitching on [insert popular social network]. As the sayings go:

"play stupid games, get stupid prizes"

"play with fire, get burn"

They though they were untouchable, that their work were so secure so they got drenched in hubris. While I dont applaud some AI taking actual jobs, I dont feel a gram of sorrow for these fuckers getting fired. On the other hand, the good translators that did not do any of the mentioned fuckery, I hope you can land on your feet soon.

MTL is absolute dogshit, I know because I've used it before for translating interviews and even then I could tell it was getting a lot of shit wrong when figures of speech were used or jargon or when it misread a kanji and just made shit up.

Just tried the app for all the thirdworldfags who can't.

only reading option is vertical scrolling with split spreads because changing it would break their stupid feed system that doesn't even seem necessary for an app that requires an actual attention span

coooin system

maybe like 40 titles are actually translated by the owners of the app, out of which I recognized only a handful

all the titles on the front page and their feed system are just licensed from viz and kodansha

fairly easy to tell their "exclusives" were translated by AI even without knowing Japanese; inaccuracies, bad grammar, and clunky/repetitive dialogue all over the place

I appreciate the efforts to make a single platform for buying/reading manga alla Bookwalker, but once again an understanding of their target audience eludes these corpos.
