There's a multitude of factors. Aka baited shippers and especially incestfags hard, then pissed off all of them by chickening out of picking a winner for the Aquabowl. Ignoring the shipping bullshit, the ending is decent in theory as a tragic ending, but Aka absolutely fumbled the execution and pacing. Arguably the writing was on the wall after the halfway point of the manga, but until the last chapter released there was always a thin albeit misplaced hope that Aka would tie things up in a satisfying way.

Anon, the entire story portrays idolfags as obsessive losers who love their idea of their idol and never get to know the real them, so it makes perfect sense for Aqua to sacrifice himself for the sake of what he thought was the most important thing to Ruby with no regards for the thing that actually meant the most to her
The story also portrays idols as this fake things that need to live up to their fans expectation, their lies being the ultimate form of their love for their fans so Ruby becoming the greatest idol by putting on a mask and hiding her pain makes perfect sense
The ending we got is perfectly consistent with the story as it was told
