the anime follows the LN almost word-for-word. the manga is written by a separate author who just consults with the LN author but ultimately seems to be allowed to just write whatever she likes. the manga is astronomically far behind in the overall story, so it seems to be focused less on actually following the plot and more just adds cutesy romcom stuff into the early era of the overall plot. at the rate its been going, the manga would basically never catch up to the actual LN plot
