Same thing happened with Nanatsu no Taizai and technically the same happened with Blue Lock, only that instead of a Studio change it was leaving it to a guy that hadn't directed anything before because they had their hands full.

I don't think people pretend that he was important to the story but the way the story is framed at the beginning definitely makes it seem like him and Pocoloco will be important characters only to barely matter at all.
