Elven spirit summoner

It feels like every other elf in anime is a "spirit summoner". Where did this archetype come from? As far as I'm aware, it's completely absent from any Western sources, older or contemporary.

elves are often in tune with nature

spirits are essentially part of nature or represent fundamental elements of the world

It's the first elf in your picture (who also happens to be the very first domestic Japanese elf)

who also happens to be the very first domestic Japanese elf

I'm sorry, but this misconception needs to die. The first elf in Japan was Elf 17. Her manga began in 1984, whereas Deedlit was only created in 1986.

Technically she might've been there earlier, but Deedlit was far more influential
every elf nowadays inherits her core DNA from Deedlit, but how many elves were inspired by elf 17? Can you name 1?

Can you name 1?

I can! Deedlit lol

Nigga you can't be serious, these two have nothing in common between the two of them, even the genre is fundamentally different

The basis is in Shintoism, which native Japanese would understand

these two have nothing in common

Aside from being an elf? Being a green-eyed blonde? Being the love interest? It's pretty damn plausible that Izubuchi based his design for Deedlit on her, seeing how she was THE popular elf in Japan at the time, if not the one and only elf any mangaka was likely to have seen. Manga is all about borrowing and adapting successful designs, and this seems to be a clear cut case of that.

As far as I'm aware, it's completely absent from any Western sources, older or contemporary.

It is very much inspired by western sources. Elves are related to fairies and spirits (or similar creatures). In Tolkien Elves were in contact with settings gods all time and many were close friends with various super natural beings

which native Japanese would understand

I have no doubt. Unfortunately, I'm not a native Japanese, so I don't. Can you explain it?

Elves are related to fairies and spirits

elves are faeries
elf is a germanic word, faerie is romance, but they refer to the same thing

Manga is all about borrowing and adapting successful designs

all of art is about borrowing and adapting successful designs

wouldn't elves be master swords(elves?)men since they have centuries on humans?
i like the girls here and am ok with marcille and freeren and the typical dainty archetype of elves lately even the otaku elf nerd.
i understand the usual high aptitude for magic and archery. however i always thought that in these settings elves even the females would be whirling dervishes that could only be taken down by overwhelming numbers. like the highest caliber of DEXfags.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think elves could use magic at all in LotR, nor were there any spirits involved aside from ghosts, if you can call them that.

You do realize Lodoss was based on a D&D campaign, right? It was first published as a tabletop "Replay" before the actual novel version.

the ultimate dexfag

all the fat

Does not compute.
Enjoy falling into a ditch after one combo.

I do realise. D&D doesn't have iconic designs inherent to it, it's just a bunch of rules and tables, especially so back then and in Japan, where the creators of Lodoss explicitly played a bootleg version.

Scandi-elves and fairies are different things

This is what elves looked like in D&D illustrations at the time when Lodoss was a campaign storytime. Not very Deedlity.

Elf_2e.png - 379x669, 318.98K

my bad dude i just wanted to post some fat tits.

Scandi-elves

scandi-elves weren't even a thing in scandinavia until the interest in them was revived in the romantic period
they degraded into girls with tails who danced in circles in the woods, exactly the same as faeries

wouldn't elves be master swords(elves?)men since they have centuries on humans?

Raw strength and endurance always trump finesse in real combat
Anyway, people don't want elves to fight in close combat because they don't want cute girls to get injured

Rewatch movies or better, read books

this is what anime saved you from

380855.png - 720x900, 205.37K

I have read the books, faggot.

Eh? Her design feels like that mixed with Japanese 80s anime/manga aesthetic. You have a tunic and cape, but with the huge shoulder pads the late 80s and early 90s loved.

So read again and slowly

How about instead you stop acting like a bitch for five seconds and actually say what's wrong? No? Thought so.

No, but I've seen this illustration about five million times now.

The Swedish word for fairy is a bastardisation of "elf"

Not that anon but LOTR magic is just very low-key and Galadriel or someone notes that hobbits are imprecise for using the word magic as a catchall term

Glorfindel cause a river to flood the plains and drowned the Nazgul. This was actually the most badass spell in the book, none of the so-called "wizards" did anything even remotely cool.

And they replaced him with Aragorn girlfriend in movies

destroy the local ecology to get back at your enemies, indubitably drowning a whole bunch of rats and other subterranean animals along with them

Ah yes, elves and their famous living in harmony with the nature.

There wasn't enough rape therefore I had no interest in it.

elf rape.jpg - 983x729, 302.97K

That was Elrond and more like a protective ward

Tolkien magic is very subtle but the deadliest parts are prophecies and fate related magic. The kind of unavoidable disaster that a fireball or lighting bolt can't do.

Unironically the right call, it gave some screentime to an important character who essentially serves as talking furniture in the book while also removing a superfluous character who appears for two scenes and makes no sense to the people unfamiliar with the Silmarillion.

Prophesying isn't magic, it's a divine revelation. You can't receive a prophecy at will, and, indeed, no one does in Tolkien's books.

It made a very strong impact on anons.

What was Deedlit's class?

Done in one, and so of course it's utterly ignored.

she's a groomer, therefore, she's a spirit summoner

summons shota from another world

because it makes no sense lol
everything in nature is a part of nature

I don't know any isekai like that, but I know some where the opposite is the case.

As far as I'm aware, it's completely absent from any Western sources, older or contemporary

Talking to minor gods is something an elf, as a minor god, can naturally do.

Lol Glorfindel is the farthest thing from a tree hugger
He's a bloodthirsty death machine on par with Frieren

Anime elves aren't minor gods lol

Many older elves were hotheaded idiots who got themselves killed. The present-day Tolkien ones are the ones who survived charging into a Balrog or Dragon's mouth or were smart enough not to do it.

They created the shaman class in the companion for her.

Ling...

She's cute, such a shame that she was forgotten.

The problem wasn't giving her more screentime, it's that she basically does nothing after the river and there was some out of nowhere shit about her life force being linked to the Ring or whatever

shaman

spirit summoner

Sodesne!
Naruhodo!

Floods happen all time in nature

kinda wild that the class associated with orcs and goblins in the west became the default for elves in the east

They were both superfluous desu, only Aragorn is important
Bakshi cut them both and just had Legolas show up earlier

Nah, L-Gaim from 84 had some villains with huge shoulder pads. The fantasy series Leda is from 85 and has an heroine in bikini armor with huge shoulders. The UY episodes from around this time when portraying generic fantasy also already had characters with huge shoulder pads too, so it seemed to be fairly widespread already.

so do forest fires
this is not an excuse for people to cause them

What are you talking about? Lodoss Companion and Sword World allowed you to combine races and classes. Elves weren't fixed to shamans.
And where were shamans associated with orcs or goblins?

But she is of key importance to Aragorn's character arc...

if you don't think shamans are strongly associated with orcs and goblins, I don't think you consume any media at all

Elves weren't fixed to shamans.

have you seen the op post?

I don't recall any of these characters (who seem to be minor anyway), so the point that Deedlit popularised them still stands.

The stigma and racism associated with shamans in the West are completely absent in East Asia. Noblewomen and wives of rulers traditionally fulfilled the role of shamans, and one of the Confucian Classics includes a lot of shamanistic poetry.

I associate shamans with tribal cultures. There's some settings where orcs or goblins have a tribal structure and have shamans accordingly but they aren't the only ones with it. In other settings they have regular priests and religion or have nothing like that at all.

Top kek

There's some settings where orcs or goblins have a tribal structure

yeah, 99% of them
like, orcsen is the only one where they don't

I would literally never even TOUCH an Elf maiden if I knew she lay with a Human beast.

Lord of the Rings has shamans?

elven spirit summoner thread

Fuck yeah

meneldor not mentioned

wat

Curiously, it doesn't have religion in any way, shape or form

Anon Babble doesn't care if the elf is not female.

No elfs for you!

hea-thumbsup.gif - 498x281, 1.64M

This is correct.

Is the books still on decline?

I mean... if she had sex, then by definition she can't be a maiden...

reading ranobe

Shiggy diggy

Sword Maiden...

Cute satanist elf

It was not always an anime, you know.
Or a manga.
I remember feeling great about how the first volume ended, but the next one, eh...

Holy Jesus, how tiny are Emilia's feet? I didn't realise elves practised foot binding.

pngegg.png - 820x528, 158.77K

Ranobes always have poor prose which the manga does away with
Pretty pictures can make the worst dogshit palatable

Depends on how you define a minor god and how much more powerful than a human they really need to be. Deedlit certainly fits most of the criteria, and lusting after fat human dick isn't exactly rare when it comes to folklore nymphs

What seems to be the issue? Large body extremities are manly and unappealing. Small feet are qt.

prose

I just can't get over how long it takes for a scene in a real novel.
I pick up some random thing and it's just three pages describing one guy's appearance and his twitches.

We don't want gross manoids here
The only reason he's remembered at all is because he looks like a perfect girl

Based and checked

I dread what's going to happen when you try poetry

I already tried.
I honestly feel my brain cells frying by the second.
However, I can go through Clarimonde in one sitting.

These feet aren't small, they're atrophied.

It's an overcorrection from Deedlit, who infamously had ginormous feets.

I never touched Tik Tok.
It's just my ESL brain is incapable of understanding poetry.

Nice grippers for climbing the trees

Your language doesn't have poetry written in it? English poetry is shit tbqh, every European country has better poetry, not to mention Japan

Marie is literally just "What if Deedlit travelled to modern Japan?"

There is, the literary scene is actually quite alive... it's just that they all use the same slang language that city people use.
I just can't relate to any of them.

hundreds of Emilia went to Modern Japan fics

It boggles my mind how people can compare her to Emilia. Beside the colour scheme and the "spirit summoner" class they have nothing in common, you could even make a case that they're opposites.

Titmilia is the hottest

Everyone have different idea about Emilia.

every elf nowadays inherits her core DNA from Deedlit.

Which character impregnated her multiple times?

Please understand. The average rezerotard has not watched or read anything besides rezero

cutest elf

Then she's a sword whore.

holy based, I wish I had this level of dedication

Very bright shoulders.

I have no idea where the dissenting opinions come from. She's not a particularly complex or multilayered character.

They're on the different ends of the spectrum.
