It's another episode of how on screen they are absolutely have 0 chemistry together, but the 'story' is pushing for them as 'perfect couple lelz'.

Just a thought regarding this. I'm not saying it won't happen before the anime, but most of the series that has spoilers from WSM had an anime and at some point or even now sold more than 20k. So Mayonaka needs to be more popular to get spoilers. Medaka also had an anime, it didn't help at all (shockerz), so it also won't get spoilers even if confessions happen. The interest on that one was lukewarm to begin with.

Nothing will be the next toubun. You are talking about something that 800k+ with every volume. Even half or a quarter of this would be more than enough.

Mayonaka has more actual heroines than decorations, more myterybaiting and an MC with an actual personality. Medaka pretty much just got stucked and got lower and lower after some initial tame buzz. It doesn't help it was bootleg Kaguya-sama to begin with during the time period of Kaguya's success. It got the late, pity anime treatment, but they know it won't boost crap. #1 rule of romcoms is that you consistently has to increase and that way the anime hopefully does a splendid job of going further. But stagnating or outright decreasing before an anime is DOA adaptation most of the time.

What do you think will happen if the anime does end up flopping and/or fails to boost the manga?

Nothing. In case you fear or hope Mayonaka gets the axe, by that time the manga can comfortably enter the final saga and have a natural ending. Even Medaka has its cast at their 3rd year and given last chap had a confession, it could easily quick start the ending saga.

Damn those numbers are small when you consider 5toubun used to sell 1.6 million per volume.

And Blue Box comfortably outsells those combined all alone for WSJ. Not because it's groudnbreaking or anything, but at least it doesn't look like dogshit and it's not a cheap PowerPoint presentation.

5Toubun was lightning in a bottle so I don't know why they are still trying to recapture that magic instead of moving on. At some point people are gonna notice, especially how their various attempts at 5Toubun 2.0 (Amagami, Cafe, and now Mayonaka) aren't doing all that well. Meanwhile they have an actual possible hit on their hands (Seitokai) yet they're still sitting on the manga.
