Is Puella Magi Madoka Magica overrated?

This is lauded as the NGE of mahou shoujo but I’m like halfway through and it seems to be the weakest Urobuchi work I’ve seen yet. Not much character development, very basic plot and payoffs revolve around killing off characters. Thunderbolt Fantasy at least has charismatic campy characters and a goofy entertaining plot, whereas Madoka just takes itself fully seriously despite how shallow it is just like Psycho-Pass.

Or maybe it’s just me? IDK. Enigmatic Gale is a better manipulator character than Kyuubey as well, Kyuubey is just too overpowered it’s boring and Madoka is just a dumb blank slate that anyone can manipulate.

I don't care, and I don't think you should either

Homu website

I’m like halfway through

it's only fucking 12 episodes

No, it's a masterpiece.

This is lauded as the NGE of mahou shoujo

NGE = generic mecha series people think is unique because they've never seen any other mecha
In a sense it is the NGE of mahou shoujo because you sure as fuck haven't watched any others

phoneposter

campy

IDK

faggot. opinion discarded.

Name one mahou shoujo anime that did what Madoka did.

what do you mean by "did what madoka did"
princess tutu and nanoha did a lot of things similarly to madoka, and i haven't even explored the genre that much.
sailor moon even had darker episodes and themes. mahou shoujo has always been dark. fucking minky momo got hit by a bus and died in the last episode
madoka isn't even a mahou shoujo anyway. it just uses the genre's aesthetics to make a point.

also, to continue, i can name multiple anime directed by the same person (akiyuki shinbou) that did what madoka did, including yamamoto yohko (1999), cossette no shouzou and galaxy fraulein yuna (2nd ova).

People who care so much about the reception an anime has received are weird. What do YOU think?

to be fair the retard did state what he thought about it (in relation to the public perception) i still dont give a fuck about his opinion because how the fuck has he not seen madoka in the year 2025? must be a newfag

Thanks anon, I was hoping to subtly get a recommendation out of this and you provided me with multiple. Have a nice day.

suggests you aren't op, so have a nice day.

It's kamen rider ryuki but with cute girls, of course it's fun.

NGE isn’t generic, don’t be ridiculous.

yuritroon thread

Yeah. It does feel like Madoka is just a regular person on a tour of Urobuchis' magical girl world. Yes, the characters are thin. Butcher standard. Yes, the ending is a deus ex machina Yes it fucking is, shut up. Butcher standard. Yes the dialogue just repeatedly circles a few key ideas without actually going anywhere. Butcher standard.

But the scenario is a good idea. Also, while the characters have little personality, they have very strong theming. Pic related.

That's always been my position on Butcher. He's great at scenarios. He's not-so-great-to-bad at just about everything else. But the movie makes up for it. Really draws the audience in with wish fulfillment, dives into the scenario, which again is clever, then it goes Deus Ex machina but does so not to save the day, but plunge it deeper into uncertainty and conflict, before ending at the literal tipping point.

I tried getting into cardcaptor sakura but as I expected, female oriented series are just not for me. Magi Madoka being yuribait is a lot more accessible to male watchers, the girls are like pseudo men

bumps the thread on page 10

I'm tired of being right sometimes

I like both Eva and Madoka but I hate the fact that both of them are used as an excuse for people to not watch other mecha or magical girl anime.

weakest Urobuchi work

TF is good but i still think Madoka is the best work of urobuchi , even above psycho pass or Saya no Uta. Just my 2 cents.

Kyuubey is just too overpowered

I think Enigmatic Gale is the overpowered if he just does things for fun. Like, "i don't want to kill my enemies, i want to make fun of people".

Deconstructions do that. One day someone will make a masterpiece CGDCT deconstruction about high school girls who live a wonderful life in a club room, and they stay there all day having fun but they do it because each of them have a home life that is an absolute nightmare. It will be praised forever as a deconstruction of the genre and people will substitute watching that instead of Azumanga Daioh, Hinako Note or K-on.

School Live tried to be a deconstruction, but the SOL elements always felt like a mask that the Zombie apocalypse show was wearing and not a true deconstruction.

Yeah.
But the opposite is also annoying, discounting them because they aren’t “real” mecha or magical girl, or overemphasizing their influences.

And then people will say that cgdct anime never had sad or emotional moments like the new series.

OH, CGDCT is one of the best genres to sneak in a tear jerking punch to the gut. Some of the best. Up there with the most tragic shonen deaths, and most passionate love story heart breaks. You know how? Because people still don't see it coming. They always expect cute girls doing cute things forever. [Evil laugh]

I'm so glad K-On didn't end with that scene, I don't think I could've recovered from that.

While I agree, the final concert episode was the climax of the series, and everything else was more of an emotional denouement. But the final song to Azusa was just the perfect little emotional bow on the end.

Are you new to anime?

Hitomi is underrated.

Oh definitely. I was worried about feeling left hollow after the show ended, but they did an amazing job at bringing you down and ending it on a sweet note.

It being overrated just proves it is the NGE of mahou shoujo

If you dont like it 6 episodes in, just drop it its not for you, you are never going to like it

Goddamn Naoko Yamada is a genius. There wasn't one episode where she didn't carry your attention on the smallest stakes you could imagine and still delivering big payoffs and deep heart wrenches. I can even forgive her if she truly does have a foot fetish.

what a dumbass thread. who cares whether normies like something too much? it's a great series either way but yeah there's better. that's just kind of a given. try asking tiktok dumb fuck

What do you define as character development and exactly how much of it is supposed to happen within 6 episodes?

extremely. see you next thread when this is asked again.

i hate the enigmatic gale so much bros

No, its a masterpiece

Who gives a shit?
Can't wait for the new movie

Revue Starlight did the time travel gimmick way better. When there’s too much build-up, it just ends up feeling lame. Less is more. Repeating the best school year 66 times hits way harder than just trying to save your friend because you're a faggot.

Not a biased take since I watched it in 2025. The plot moves so damn slow, esp the Sayaka storyline. The whole thing just drags, which is weird because Monogatari never felt this sluggish.

Another thing that frustrates me is how they act like Kyoko and Sayaka had some special faggot bond outside the anime timeline. It's annoying how there's barely any bonding in the actual series, and then they just throw in a line in the Rebellion movie like a band-aid fix for the fans.

How can you think it drags or moves slowly? IMO it moves way too quickly and there's not enough room for things to breathe. The Sayaka stuff especially would probably be more impactful if it didn't happen within in episode or two.

It's annoying how there's barely any bonding in the actual series

This is an example of how it moves too quickly and doesn't have enough downtime.

Madoka i love you.

madoka_39.jpg - 1200x926, 62.51K

your attention span is fried if you think madoka moves "too slow"

happy Walpurgisnacht everyone

Madokami comes with Sagitta luminis in background, Kino.

Madoka aired closer to Serial Experiments Lain than to the present
