You can enjoy since the focus is MS battling, but you'll lose a lot on worldbuilding. From what I've seen so far GQuX expects you to have watched at least 0079, Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counterattack, and that's just to understand the scenario. If you really want to go deep it also references a lot of other Gainax stuff like FLCL, Diebuster, Eva...
At least watch the 3 compilation movies for 0079, the 3 compilation movies for Zeta and the CCA movie if you're too impatient to sit through everything, they actually skip Challia Bull IIRC but at least you won't be left in the dark about what newtypes are or what a zeknova is supposed to be.

Nyaan is a nothing character right now. Machu is a combo of Naota and Mamimi, Shuji is Canti, Char/Red Gundam is Atomsk.

Shuji is Haruko, basically the first crush.

Shuji is a conduit for newtype power like Canti for Atomsk's N.O., that Machu wants (like Haruko wanted), but the reason Machu wants it is to cure boredom (like Naota wanted Haruko). Shuji is like Haruko though, in the sense that he awakens sexual feelings in Machu, that get meshed together with her wanting to escape from boredom (like Naota felt confused about wanting Haruko for sex and also wanting to be free like her because she reminded him of his brother who escaped Mabase). Machu does have Mamimi inside her too.
It's basically a mess where each character mirrors many different aspects of many different characters, and even that is an enormous Gundam reference since every new entry after 0079 did the same thing (my favorite Garma is still Treize).

Works both ways, Canti represents the ideal adult to Naota, his brother.

Shuji represents the ideal life of freedom to Machu.

Fuck adult swim for trying to milk this series. I hope they're losing money on these sequels.

This A bunch of greedy adult swim execs wanted money so they hired a bunch of japanese animators that mostly had nothing to do with the original FLCL, bought the IP, and created sequels that had nothing to do with what made the original good and failed to capture any aspect of the story beyond the shallowest references. The sequels were made by people who admittedly didn't like the original. If you want anything close to a successor to FLCL watch Diebuster (Gunbuster first) and GquuuuuuX.

There were so many shots in episode 1 that were reminiscent of FLCL. Makes sense since the got the original FLCL director on board for this. EVEN GUNDAM DOES FLCL BETTER THEN FLCL NOW!

I can’t even put into words how much I love FLCL. It gets what I love about animation, visually I’ve been coming off that high since the first time I saw it.

I'm over the moon with my love of Gundam and Gainax. I miss that era so much and have a lot of nostagia. I discovered Gundam around that time too.

Anno is like Miyazaki, he criticizes Otaku because he’s criticizing himself, they’re one otaku gen apart though so Anno is even more embedded.

Yeah, I think Yamaga embezzling so much cash may have had an effect on him besides just the effects eva had on him because, for a while there during the 00s, he was still hanging there.
IIRC he wrote a bit for these first 4 eps. I thought it was a pity he wasn't 2d animating mecha, but the CGI in this is unusually well done, they have a good notion of weight and timing, it almost looks like a vidiya studio.
This is his unretirement arc, lol. I love how infatuated he is with Miyazaki and Tomino. He probably aims to be more "authentic" than Miyazaki though (if you look at the "fancy underwear" interview), so I'm hoping he noticed he had to wear his otaku self on his sleeve for this.
It's probably too far-fetched but I wish they'd recycle a bit of boukyaku no senritsu. That show had its flaws but I liked it. i should rewatch it.

GQuuuuuuX isn't the reward for putting up with 0079, it's what you watch when you've run out of Universal Century Gundam to watch and need a fix. Rushing the 0079 movies to watch it is akin to watching some youtuber sumarize the story in Dragonball, Z and Super so you can skip to Daima. You're free to do that, but if the franchise isn't more important than FOMO to you then why not watch any of the bajillion standalone seasonals available?
