Nah, it actually makes a lot more sense. There's every reason for mages to form a guild: apprenticeship, self-policing, defending themselves from shithead priests, forming libraries and protecting them, sharing new spells, etc. It's the same reason why the early scientific societies were formed, and because magic is the fantasy analogue of science, it only makes sense that they work the same way. Adventurers though? That's just a game mechanic grandfathered from JRPG's.
