By this point the show had already ended when the chapters were coming out
Jojolands shows that he most definitely did but now looking at how the rock humans are basically doing drug trafficing, their boss is someone who hides in plain sight, the have a set of twins who are the foot soldiers, and there's a strong theme of family through out the part
It's a stretch but it's something that would make sense

Jousuke won the lottery in his fight against Damo. The one person he saved from that accursed family is the one who is actually a straight fighter with a brutal direct combat ability that instantly mogs anyone they lay their eyes upon in half a second. Everyone except Hato has a primarily non-combat ability, it would have made a lot more sense for Hato to have some weird shit like "I can manipulate colors to see the feelings of memories as butterflies that vibrate in morse code to predict in the future using pop culture song lyrics". But nooooo, she's the one with the "you die now" ability. Bravo Araki.

Jojolion broke Jojo youtube, it was kind of eye opening to see all the coping.

The Higashikata family not being more involved in the plot as either allies or enemies beyond their introductory arcs despite being so central to the plot was one of Araki's biggest mistakes.

Damo should have fucking WON during this arc. Killing Norisuke and maybe some other Higashikata and then escaping. Then the rest of the story is Josuke and rest of the family banding together and hunting down the remaining riggers.

The disconnect is definitely there but on some level it's intentional. Partly because the connection is a secret, partly because there's a deliberate duality between Tooru appearing and acting young and him secretly being extremely old and how that's reflected in his stand looking like an old man. Whether that makes for a good story or not is another matter though. You could argue WoU itself is the main villain but I understand why that doesn't sit right with people.

I already have a Stand. It's a shitty Stand that activates like once every few years. I can't control it, only follow its autistic set of rules. Sometimes I wish I had a punchghost.

Honestly, I think the lack of punchghosts works in Jojolands, since the characters are petty crooks thrust into combat rather than proper fighters.
Same goes for SBR, where one of the main characters isn't a stand user and would be completely outclassed by even one punch ghost. And the wild west setting works better when the heroes can be threatened by guns.

it's GREAT but ruined by kaato breaking WoU rules being his demise, either make him die from Go Beyond or in an accident. An accident being the finishing blow would've been more thematically interesting because the inspiration for the part is calamity, the 2011 earthquakes, the Wall Eyes ripping apart and creating Josuke. He could've tied it in a much neater bow. My favorite aspect of Toru's character is him being in love with Yasuho because I believe that's partially real, but he sees her as a pet, or still like a child. Because him dating her in high school wasn't part of his MASTER PLAN he just kinda wanted to. Toru has good subtext but a lot of what his deal was should've been shown on paper, leaves people half-headcanoning what they believe his true motives were. My interpretation was that he was morbidly fascinated with human life and desired it deep down, and that manifested in a stand which allowed him to live two lives at once to be safe from all danger, thus "Safety First". Then separately from that, but sorta connected, he wanted to weaken the human race with medicine he knew harmed them long term and more importantly making humanity reliant on rock humans for help, tipping the scales.

This is one of the best stand design of Jojolion, even if it only appears briefly, it perfectly fits the user and the context of the scene. Hato was portrayed as a weak minded indecisive crybaby during the entirety of Tamaki Damo's wild ride up until the point she gets serious and her stand is revealed and you can immediately tell, oh yeah, Damo's life is over. She is part 8's Fugo, the only thing her stand does is instakill you at close range because you got the user 300% mad. Damo was just stupidly lucky she was in love and gave him so much chances, then her stand comes out and we finally see what Hato is really like on the inside. Even the majority of serial killers in this series don't typically have such a huge, buff, angular, inflexible, angry-killer-robot-murder-puppet stand.

There's way worse manga out there for sure and I'd struggle to even call it truly "bad". It's definitely Jojo at its core, but I'm not gonna pretend I don't think everything after this arc is a bit of a slog peppered with cool moments here and there.

I'd love if he did genuinely have more sympathetic traits, like if he genuinely wanted to help people despite having the embodiment of calamity always lingering behind him.

I decided to look at overall ratings for Jojolion in comparison to the other parts.
Somehow, on average, the only parts higher than it are 4 and 7

Yeah no I'm sorry but Kira's arc in part 4 mogs the entirety of Jojolion.

The man of the land/sea thing is a Japanese thing that gets lost in translation without the cultural context.
Men of the land were ones who would work close to home and be home every night.
Men of the sea were usually like fishermen and sailors who'd be gone for long periods of time and only see their families every few weeks or so. This has later expanded in the modern day to also include salarymen who are gone all the time or who take long business trips.
Jojolion takes this more literally, with Kira and Josefumi having jobs that pertain to the sea and land in a literal sense.
Ojiro is a non-committal bum who doesn't work, so Kira doesn't think he's a real man at all. Him not being a man of the land or sea is also made literal by him surfing, which is done on the coast, never going too far inland or too far out to sea.

I think people will forget how most parts have their stumbles. Namely

SC's entire first stretch is extremely boring at times

GW gets extremely confused towards the end, and has some of the worst panelling

SO used to be actively mocked for many of its arcs

I think JoJolion hit people different because it was so long and because for so many people it was the first part they lived through instead of reading it finished, but I also think people will come around to it over time.

Honestly, I think an automatic stand final boss could have theoretically worked, especially a sentient one like WoU. But the fact that its power makes it impossible to do anything to it means that the final fight is nearly impossible to make interesting.

Kira's arc in part 4 mogs most of the entire fucking genre it belongs to though, let's be real.

Yeah, it's a shame people don't appreciate the first few side villains, but I guess it happens routinely in this series.

Why do they have ratings before a manga finishes? I understand that it's so people can check if it's good before reading it. My issue though is what if the story changes in quality then the reviews before that change won't be able to reflect that.

JoJo sameface is indeed a meme for the most part, but this image isn't the best argument. Anyone who isn't disingenuous can see that all characters have distinctive face shapes and features.

I can understand why as seasons are also split up and Jojo parts while all similar do have have enough differences in content/quality to warrant separation. It does though inflate the rating of the parts in my opinion since it's unlikely someone who doesn't like Jojo is gonna read far enough to get to later parts. So it naturally filters out people from reviewing say part 7 or 8.

Jojolion starts at Volume 105. To put into perspective, Volume 105 of One Piece is when they leave Wano.
Of course someone who's been reading a manga for that long is going to rate it highly.

Bleach: TYBW is the most egregious example of this, being #1 on MAL at one point and still being #12 with a 9.0 score.
