How did Tomino do it? I'm rewatching Zeta and both it and 0079 are both in superb at making the world feel as believable as possible. Even throwaway background scenes have something going on the makes sense or helps you buy into it.

I'd imagine as things snowballed against the EF, they became more desperate and brutal. It happened in the original timeline as well (see the Titans). Here's a thought. Defeat and a bad peace has a way of radicalizing the loser. With their defeat, Titans will have even more support than they did in Zeta. Rather than the Federation just tolerating them as a necessary evil, we may get a Federation that fully embraces the Titan ideology. The Titans will no longer be the Federation's space stasi, they will literally be the whole Federation military.

Considering that this Zeon had the Gundam, used it as the template for their next-gen mobile suits, and won the OYW, it certainly doesn't seem like this version of the OYW was worse for them at all. They've also probably been robbing and plundering the colonies and various other resources for years.
