Machu being this Quess type of character is also a way to explore how a Newtype isn't automatically some superior human being. Despite her desire to have a Newtype flash, generally through piloting alongside Shuji, Machu hardly seems to actually understand anyone, including herself.

We're 6 episodes deep and I still don't know what motivates Machu. What would inspire an upper middleclass girl with a loving mother to engage in underground death battles and risk life in prison for stealing government property.
If she wanted to go to Earth there was easier ways of getting there and if she wanted action she could have signed up for the military/police.
Every other Gundam protagonist were forced into a war/conflict, Machu is the first one who appears to be doing it out of boredom.

They're not Kira Yamato for fucks sakes. At any moment the intruders could have shot them down at which point everyone's life in the colony is at risk. They had to fire, and doing so in the slums would result in the least damage. Yet Machu attempted to murder them just because of their limitations.

I currently prefer Nyaan to Machu, but it feels like she'll fall short the moment they decide to flesh her out. Machu begun the show by looking for a way out of boredom, and while that can be boring in itself since it means she can't be the source of what ends her own boredom, it gives her a yearning that can carry her through the entire show. It was interesting to see her learning from Shuji that she had to be ready to kill to achieve her dreams. We still don't know for a fact what Machu is capable of or stands for, and finding that out weekly, with her, is nice.
Nyaan has the front-loaded interesting backstory of trying to become a citizen, needing a load of cash and not wanting to engage in the risky activities she's forced to. To her, what is Machu's goal is her means to an end. She wants the cash, for a clear objective, she needs it. Unlike Machu, Nyaan and Shuji don't kira-kira for the sake of it, they like it but they do it for a higher purpose. In that way, Machu is masturbating while Nyaa and Shuji are having unprotected sex. Machu will only overcome Nyaa as the more interesting character once she finds out what she wants other than swimming in the earth's ocean (or finding out that she really wants that and it's not just some excuse). Until then, Nyaa will keep being cooler, because she has something palpable to pursue, while Machu lies to herself about her onanist dreams having a higher meaning.
