It is hard to describe. It is essentially about whatever the author thinks of. Stuff about vampires tends to be action packed, with horror elements and gore. There is plenty of slice of life fanservicey scenes with lolis and bathing girls and incest and such. There is time travel and other random suddenly big things. There are also mysteries. A more recent grouping of stories set to be adapted are just detective novels. Albeit, those were largely considered somewhat boring so he author is going to try new stuff now. The world of Monogatari is very vast despite only really centering on a guy and three undead little girls. Despite traditional romance not being what the author is going for, there is quite a few relationships bursting with romanticization. These sweet stories can stick in your head. It is just important to remember to keep watching even if you find part boring. Chances are, you may even enjoy the next arc a whole lot. Shaft, the studio, also always makes beautiful art. Monogatari is a series that will often take unique and unconventional turns, but always make them work out in the end.
Tldr: loli's are erotic, so are sisters. Watch this show if you want to see their cute butts.

The difference between monogatari fanservice and most fanservice slop is that, slop fanservice is a boob grab or panty shot. it's boring and doesn't provide anything of interest to the viewer. Monogatari on the other hand is 70% ecchi and actually draws the attention of the viewer (me) and piques my interest (makes me rub my meat). Simply, fanservice is bad usually because it's uninteresting. Shaft does it well because it gets me to half mast.

The real difference is sensuality. Monogatari makes things feel sexy even when it’s not explicitly sexual, and doubly so when it is. Generic fanservice is just portraying sexual situations with no sexiness.
