The main arc of the show is Takumi becoming passionate about racing and realizing that it's more important to him than his dumb girlfriend could ever be.

At first Mogi's all he cares about, but blowing the 86's engine was a wake-up call for him that she isn't worth sacrificing his love of racing for. So, when Mogi asks Takumi to come to Tokyo with her, there was never a chance of him saying yes. He knows what he wants out of life and she isn't a necessary part of that.

Later, Takumi gets with Mika who is someone that matches Takumi in terms of drive, passion, and talent. Because of his newfound sense of self worth, Takumi wouldn't settle for any less than what this girl offers him. She doesn't supersede his passion for racing, though. He lets her into his life so they can chase their dreams together.

The theme of self-esteem and value is present in every romantic relationship in the show. Iketani fucks up his relationship with Mako because he doesn't think he's good enough for her, Itsuki fucks both of his relationships because his ego is bigger than his actual value, Keisuke dumps Kyoko because she isn't worth compromising his goals for, etc.

This theme is exemplified in Final Stage when Takumi races against a representation of himself from First Stage, Shinji. Shinji is as good as Takumi is, but he doesn't really care about racing. He just wants to impress Mako and Sayuki, and he blows the race attempting to do that.

To be fair as much as I love Initial D, the final battle with Shinji is as bullshit and lazy as it gets. He either needed more development or foreshadowing, or his driving style being more interesting. Gitting gud from braking as little as possible is as bullshit as it gets when you look at how Project D improved over time in terms of technique and control, Shinji's bullshit should not have come as a surprise to them nor should Shinji's "getting serious" do anything. By that point Takumi HAD the natural talent and observation and learning and experience and the improved tuned car, there is absolutely no way he would be spooked by a kid who drives smooth with minimal braking just not to wake up his mum.

It's frustrating because they really nailed the look, but the character writing is just completely fucked. It also has some really bizarre editing choices, and I wasn't a fan of the soundtrack, but the way the races were filmed was pretty cool yeah.

I thought it was pretty good. The point of it was that the only way you'll succeed is by being in the race for the race itself, and showing how much Takumi had grown from being a teenage boy obsessed with girls. I really liked it.

I'm quite knowledgable about vehicles, never owned one I couldn't completely take apart and put back together again.
