It's all fantastic, it's more than just the exchange between Johnny and Valentine. Do you not like the part 2 finale? And the fight starting from the ball breaker to the end, while solid, isn't the best jojo has to offer in terms of being a fight imho. In fact as a fight I think high voltage coming right after it is better.

Its mostly carried by how much of a culmination of the part's charms it is with Josuke just lucking out but riding the wave, him surviving and crashing his funeral etc. Its good but I find it strange sitting next to others as its neither a good fight nor has too much emotional weight.

Here is my schizo theory from the few spoilers I saw anons. I think part 8 stealth introduced half conscious stands. Remember Yotsuyu's rape dialoge about Paisley Park being more usefull because of Yasuho not being aware of it. These stands use their power incredibly effectively to fullfill their master's unconscious desires/intentions but can also be used more manually like yasuho was doing this volume. Though in those cases they only work as good as their masters can use them.
This would imply that WoU full on controls the calamity but normally only activates it in a pursuit beacuse of Toru's desire of being safe. Since the unonscious of an old person would be more heavy/personalized it acts more sentient then Paisley Park. But still gets controlled by Toru when he wants. Toru may or may not be aware of its full capabilities

I prefer the theory that someone brought up in a previous thread, that WoU IS calamity, or a manifestation/agent of it. Sort of like Dragon's Dream. It is it's own entity representing some natural force and gives the user a slice of that power. It's why WoU can stick around after Tooru's death and why it, when not being manually controlled, can kind of fudge the rules of what counts as "pursuit" because similar to what you said, on it's own it is just calamity embodied. This also makes me love the stand more and I like both Tooru and WoU which makes me extremely peeved how he was defeated. Should have had Josuke gain the ability to plunder stands or something.

It's why WoU can stick around after Tooru's death and why it, when not being manually controlled, can kind of fudge the rules of what counts as "pursuit" because similar to what you said, on it's own it is just calamity embodied.

Sorry, but there is no good excuse for "pursuits" having an extremely loose definition, and being essentially dictated by the plot. It's just easy writing no matter how look at it.

The main character starts out with some quirks but just becomes a boring ruthless kakugoman with some admittedly cool moments. He has a stand with an overpowered ability that gets retconned pretty early into something manageable and versatile. He's actually only half Joestar and half something else.
The plot involves systematically taking down an evil group, with the first half and second half centering around facing different factions within the evil group.
The main villain keeps his identity a secret and frequently speaks through his stand and as a result is overshadowed by his own stand. The main villain's stand has a busted ability that Araki covers every base with to ensure it's actually invincible without an asspull, which the main character of course receives.
Other characters include:

An older guy with a stand that's shit in combat but good for investigation.

A guy with a bowlcut and a stand with a simple mechanical action.

A boy who looks like a girl.

A jobro whose stand is used as an excuse for him to constantly get maimed.

A girl with (usually) pink hair who awakens a stand which is sexier than she is and spends most of the part as a damsel in distress.

A traitor whose stand can cause certain death, but he only ever gets 1 win.

It can do other things, why shouldn't it?

Paisley Park's ability consists on "Guiding Yasuho and her Allies towards the right path" essentially it's a stand that helps her user get the best outcomes.
It's a Long range stand that's both automatic and semi bound, it can bound itself to her phone and other electronic devices to help her. In it's unbound form it's less versatile but safer to use because it doesn't transfer damage to Yasuho, when bound to a phone or something it's capable of manipulating software and electronics as long as it helps Yasuho find her right path but if the device Paisley Park is possessing suffers damage so will Yasuho. Thanks to it's automatic nature the stand is excellent when it comes to information gathering.

The stand is the way it is likely because Yasuho's fighting spirit is affected by both her gender and modernist framework for problem solving. The stand looks like her because she thinks of herself (her body mind, skills, etc) as her main tool to face adversity with, but since she is a woman she doesn't usually go for a direct physical approach of problem solving (low power stand) instead she relies on indirect ways and technology to get what she wants or needs (long range and bound to technology)
There's also the possibility of her low power representing a lack of character due to some internalized feeling of helplessness considering how her life is full of problems she is never able to solve or face.

The weird thing is that she was the one who created the rokakaka lab and was doing research on the plant, meaning that for some reason, she knew about it before Kira.

After the storytime, I realized there's a pattern of villains Araki has built; he doesn't follow a clear rule but has a tendency borrowed from gothic literature and european medieval folklore, even after Part 1. The villains are: a vampire, a mega vampire, a vampire with a ghost (stands), a serial killer, the devil (could also be understood as a possession, analogous to a werewolf) and a priest with a homunculus. He obviously incorporates other elements according to the setting, such as Kira representing crimes in 90s Japan or Pucci being associated with US' racial history, but the trend's still there. So I respect him reintroducing the fantastical element in Jojolion by means of the Rock Humans, specially after such a grounded enemy as Valentine, a politician. I like how he expands on their nonsensical biology, and specially the schitzo rock animals, but I do wish he had made the Rock Humans' biology be more impactful on fights.

This is my favorite thing about Jojolion I love the conspiracy aspect of what are essentially lizard people being real, hiding in the shadows, stealing identities... and then later going insane with it when Doreimifasilati Do is shown for the first time. That's one of my favorite moments in Jojolion. It's terrifying at a primal level, knowing these parasites are pretending to be people, that there's an entire branch of evolution you weren't aware of before. It also questions what "life" even is by introducing silicon-based creatures as a possibility. So cool, and I think so cool that Araki couldn't help but make the main villain a rock human which I doubt was set in stone when Yotsuyu was shown.

That's three scenes off the top of my head, there are more. You get scenes with 2-3 of them, and you get scenes with all of them. On the other hand, in SO there's no point at which everyone is actually available to hang out together and only 1 scene you see them do anything as a group, and it's a flashback. The scene playing catch with FF is the closest thing to SDC-level group dynamics that isn't a flashback, and half the group is missing.

Ermes and Anasui are the biggest weakness, they are completely underused and any attempts at characterization, for me, fall flat. Ermes peaks at the Limp Bizkit arc, which is a great fight I love it but she is dead weight from there. She's missing for the middle third, I think last time I tried counting it was closer to 50% of the part. Then once she comes back for C Moon and MIH she's not useful fight wise nor does she get more characterization. Her arc is embarrassing at best and nonexistent at worst. Anasui is a gag character, he does not change from the moment we meet him. He is a crazy person who gets roped up into saving the world because he wants to marry Jolyne. He is crazy. That's it. There's nothing under the surface, there's no personality beyond "I wanna marry Jolyne" and I think it's absurd that they get together in Ireneverse. They don't have chemistry, they're barely even together for the part. Characters being split up is the biggest flaw with the SO cast, they all look shallow. Weather Report is someone I have issues with too but less so than the aforementioned. I think his backstory is silly, I think the Heavy Weather arc is bad to the point that it undercuts the entire character and literally any other use of the ability other than snail transmutation would've been cooler. The end of the arc is cool I like the confrontation with Pucci and then ice blood spikes. I like Foo Fighters the most, she's one of the best characters Araki has ever written.

Stone Ocean suffers from two terrible failures in writing. Heaven Plan & setting the story in a prison. The heaven plan is complete nonsense, and there are people who think you can defend it by brushing it off as "jojo schizobabble" dude no it is a step beyond any shit Araki pulled before or since. DIO discovered, through a century of meditation, that he can be reborn as a green baby who when in contact with a stand user with a specific ability and recite extremely specific words, that said stand user will gain the perfect ability to manipulate gravity which can take them to specific coordinates which then evolve the stand a 3rd time to accelerate the universe to a state where... humans are unaffected. DIO knows this because he meditated in a coffin. But we're not supposed to question it because... LE FATE?! All this would've worked so much better if you literally introduced God to the story. If DIO found out how to make contact with God, hell, if DIO was God. It is lazy writing to say everything is fate. Even if things are fated there needs to be a reason for characters to reach conclusions because time is linear.

Setting 2/3 of the story in prison I think demolishes the part. It is just not fun. It's not fun to be stuck there, the story doesn't feel like it's progressing, it's a bland backdrop. Araki saw american prison movies and thought he could do it. He can't, the jap mind can't comprehend it. It's so dull dude it's like if two thirds of SBR were set before the race started... and.... we're.... just... (wait for it).... (any minute now).... waiting.... okay 12 volumes in? We're gonna start the story now?

I think this is the most middling aspect of Stone Ocean because it has some of my absolute favorite and least favorite stand battles. To name a few I think are AWFUL; Manhattan Transfer, Marilyn Manson, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Bohemian Rhapsody, Yo-Yo Ma, Dragon's Dream. These are like unreadable for me they piss me off so much just because of how dull they are. It's just dull shit. I get so bored.

This is the worst period in Araki's art style, I think it's repulsive and the anime is repulsive because it traces the art. Personal preference I guess. I hate how stands look, I hate the outfits, everything about looking at SO is noisy bloat.

From best to worst characters

FF

Definitely the strongest side character of the part, even outside of her death the character has strong foundations and Characterization plus she is actually the side character the interacted the most with Jolyne in a casual setting (yes a bit more than Hermes)
Part of me wishes she was the main deuteragonists instead of Hermes but that would complicate a few things with the plot

Anasui

Here I disagree, there's problems with the way Anasui is written but I think he is the second most solid secondary character in SO.
His goals, characterization, and dynamics are solid the main issue with him is that Araki never bothered to:
1: make the reader engage with the serious part of his personality
2: Make Jolyne react and interact genuinely with him outside of gags
Anasui is a broken and lost man who found hope in Jolyne's courage, in his own words he admits to feel completely dead before witnessing her determination.
That's a decent foundation for a character, the problem is that (while this is stated in the manga) whenever Anasui has a moment of focus it is mostly him going "UUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOHHHH JORIN!" Even in fights. Plus Jolyne never actually bounces back at him, she never reacts to his affection in a serious way (only time she rejects his Advances is also played as a joke)
This is particularly bad because he is the second character with the most on screen interactions with Jolyne and also the secondary character who interacts with almost everyone in the cast (the only one he never interacts with is Hermes)

Weather and Emporio

These two share the same spot because they have the same problem. Both are crucial characters for the story but have limited interactions with the most important elements of the story.
Emporio barely interacts with Pucci and lacks showcases of his the struggles the gay priest created in his life, Weather lacks interactions with the main cast altogether

The actual deadly sin of SO, I don't anyone can excuse her.
Despite being promoted as Jolyne's main companion she is really lacking not only in her presence in the story but also in her relationship with Jolyne.
Yeah, she shows up a lot, but if reading Jojolion 3 times made me learn anything about creative writing is that time does not equal quality, a character can show up a lot but without proper characterization it will feel like all that time is nothing.
She gets to spend the most amount of time with Jolyne but has less casual interactions with her than FF (I'm not counting battle interactions because her screaming "MASAKA JORIIIN!" Is not exactly a interaction that will give new insights on the way they behave around each other)
I feel her character would work best as a secondary character like FF (and push FF or Anasui to the status of main deuteragonists instead)

Overall I think the Supporting cast of SO is definitely flawed but not to the point of crippling the story like most people say.
And outside the realm of character interaction and characterization almost all them have a clear purpose in the story so they naturally push the plot forward without it feeling forced (and of course the one that lacks a clear purpose in the story after her arc is Hermes)

Obviously, benching Ermes and making her serve little purpose after LB are odd decisions. But I still found her interactions with Jolyne post-jailbreak solid enough like the one where they laugh at the alligators. But I would say that the bigger issue with her is that besides FF and Emporio, she doesn't interact with the rest of the cast. We all know about the Weather fiasco, but even with Anasui, it's difficult to think of any noteworthy moments between those two. And I think it hurts the entire group dynamic to have the main companion be so disconnected from the rest of the cast. This wasn't an issue with Polnareff, Okuyasu, and Bruno who all had noteworthy interactions with the side cast. But like you said, it's not that much of a big deal and doesn't bring down the part quality that much.
Now SO's actual deadly sin is how Weather was handled. He should NOT have been benched right after his introduction arc. And he should have met up with Jolyne more than ONCE.
