Gundam is about war and its impact on youths. GQX is set in a non-war environment similar to the cold war. It also doesn't have the tropes we commonly associate with the franchise.
Instead it's a coming of age story about a girl ruining her life. But the secondary fans don't know any better, you could name Big O, Code Geass, or Gurren Lagann as Gundam and these secondaries would see no problem with it as long as it has a white, blue, and red colored mech.

The death of her mom makes her realize she's making the wrong choices in life and it also makes the viewer feel sorry for her.
The military police and Zeon overlook her crimes and decide to drop all charges in exchange for her piloting the Gundam.

I really like the idea of UC being multipolar. Too often in Gundam, it's the whole Earth vs all the Colonies, and maybe some very minor neutral powers here and there sprinkled about. Here, Zeon and Earth are still the big dogs, but they aren't big enough to subjugate all the other minor powers. Like, imagine if we could get Cosmo Babylonia, Zanscare, Zeon, Federation, Riah (Machu's Side), and Jupiter all on the same political scene, and with vastly different ideologies and all vaguely hostile to one another.

Unless Deux ejected the head right when the explosion started and outpaced it, Deux was probably killed by Chalia.
