Murase-P said they wanted to show the appeal of male idols too (and given that they originally wanted a male Cure in Wonderful, them going this route isn't surprising), hence Kaito. Kaito's seiyuu is a huge otaku and was already a VA for a regular character in a different kids show, so it's not hard to see why they recruited him.

He's been badly integrated so far, but he clearly has something set up for the future given that he isn't in New York where he's supposed to be.

You are starting from the wrong end. The producer for Idol Precure wanted to show that idols can be cool as men too (Animage 2025-05). Then they had to cast someone for that idol character. And getting someone from the super popular group Snow Man to voice him is a great opportunity for Precure to send marketing signals to the overlap of Precure and Daisuke Sakuma/Snow Man fans.

Yuichi Nakamura voiced a bunny last season and it was very well received. That guy didn't need Precure for his PR either, but WP benefited greatly from him voicing Daifuku.

So, we can all agree he actually has no relevance to the plot at all and was shoehorned there for cheap promotion. That's why it feels his presence or absence in the episodes is barely noticeable.
I do believe the writer for Idol had to modify the entire plot for the show (I'm betting unwillingly) to fit this 'new character' presented at the last hour by some big shot exec at Toei. I feel like chronological order is a bad recommendation cause FW is a very different beast to even something like Fresh nevermind the most recent seasons, and even if you do like it it's really damned easy to get burnt out on that, MH and SS all back to back. It's like saying you should get into Super Sentai by watching Goranger from 1975 or something. With these kinds of franchises you're really best off just picking and choosing which seasons appeal to you and going from there.

I kind of do feel like TR relies a bit more on CGDCT cliches than normal Precure cliches, but it's not like the latter is nonexistent. I don't think it's a bad thing either way though. Other than a higher emphasis on school antics than usual, TR doesn't really stick out as being particularly atypical or experimental like Doki, HaCha, HS, or Wonderful.
I'd say even HC is more atypical than TR due to its extra heavy emphasis on the side character of the week. It's a bit jarring.

Fresh isn't that orthodox in the context of WHEN it came out.
It was the first season with a different artstyle for one, we had redeemed characters but they never became "main" Cures. We also technically never had a "mid-season" Cure (Max Heart and Yes5GoGo vaguely fit the "midseason" if you think as their respective sequels as part of the whole, but it didn't happen in the middle of the year).

Personally, I'd say any Cure that joins after the intro arc is a midseason. That does mean a couple of Cures that join the main team in the first cour yet after that season's intro arc would be considered midseasons by my definition (Cure Honey and Cure Wing). Cure Honey at least isn't part of the HaCha team proper in that year's All Stars movie, so that's some basis for considering her a midseason. Episode 1-5 of HS form such a clear intro arc that I don't consider HS episode 9 to be part of it, even though there are a couple of seasons where I would say the intro arc is comprised of episodes 1-11 (Kira Kira and Kimi to Idol)
