I liked the one shot early version of the manga better. The rest of the manga and the movie are still great, i just find the shorter story more impactful.

I agree. I watched this a few months ago without knowing much except that it was generally highly regarded. I thought it was going to be a slow romance focusing on redemption. I did not expect the heavy theme of friendship and all those side characters with super rushed developments. The drama over their broken friendships felt incredibly forced.

Manga is leagues above the movie. It's a very intricate work with a lot of care put into it. A movie is simply not a long enough format to not rush the story. I do agree that it's way overrated and should not be the best rated anime movie, not even close
