It's a remake of a genuine classic that's way too unknown in the west.

I love this remake but I have a big complaint is that it killed Sayaka's character
She's supposed to be super nonchalant about the precarious situations she's in but the staffs decided that's too goofy I guess
Should I watch the original instead? Not very familiar with the series.
The original is more comedic, going as far as adding anime original comedy scenes. It's more faithful to the manga except for the first episode and the season ending. The animation was mid even by 90s standard.
The remake is more hype moments and aura, focusing on the fight scenes. It has a lot of changes but they were supervised by the original author. The animation is top notch, made by fans of the old series.
So it really depends on what you prefer

I think the problem is that they are rushing through the first arc. Personally, I thought the first arc was dull, but its good point was that it had a lot of cute and fun character moments that helped make the characters likeable. In this case, they have been sacrificing alot of those moments in the interest of advancing the story faster.
Either way, I really liked this episode because it didn't drop those moments.
