the remake is a bit more true to the idea that she's just talking his ear off without him really being able to react, but the way it's presented isn't in line with the tone and style of the book either.

It's one of the problems leading to people to complain. Even if the new anime was a perfect adaptation of the book it would be something people pointed to. That and how it's "different from the original" because it would be different from the anime people associate it with regardless of how inaccurate it may have been. People seriously build their personalities around liking poor adaptations of things just because they're old. That may not be the case here but it's certainly something that happens. You can see a symptom of this in these posts
