i went in with that mindset after watching Mushoku Tensei and I still enjoyed it. Frieren is just very good on the merits. It the sort of thing I think if Walt Disney saw it he would be impressed. They really worked hard on the animation and music and everything.
MT first season is also extremely solid, in some ways even more technically impressive, however they are good for different reasons. Frieren has a sort of purity and internal logic to it that feels cohesive; MT is a bit of a grab-bag of ideas but no less inventive or visually arresting. Frieren is almost sterile in terms of romance, MT anything but.

Frieren's demons are not "people just like you but with horns", but I wouldn't say they're just standard bad guys. Though the first season only really hints at it with the little demon girl story. Demons aren't as much evil as they are incomatible with humanity. Even Lucifer made a concious choice to abandon good. Or Tolkien's Sauron. Which gives their choices a moral weight and makes them truly evil. But demon can understand good and evil about as much as a Komodo dragon can.

I don't watch much anime anymore, mostly because it's a sea of trash, but this was the first in about a decade which I thought was actually pretty great.
It kind of reminded me about HxH where Gon isn't setting out to save the world or be the greatest hunter ever, he really just wants to meet his dad. It's emotionally driven in a similar way with Frieren and Himmel.
Also the depiction of passage of time, use of flashbacks and connecting the past to the present events is near flawless. Rarely see anything use these things that well and still maintain good pacing throughout.

The first thing you need to know is that the medieval sleep schedule is vastly different from the modern one, it was usually divided into two parts; first sleep, which was for a couple hours, then morning sleep which was during the morning. People usually woke up in between those two periods in the early morning, before the sun rose up, and generally started preparing for the day, and the practice was still a thing until the industrial revolution, with parents usually waking up in the early morning and feeding their children bone broth or something of the sort before tending to other things before going back to sleep. With regards to how they lit up their spaces during the day it depends on the economic level and where you lived, if you where in rural areas and poor you usually relied on firewood collected from foraging in the forest or your backyard, side not but backyards where extremely important in the middle ages as if you where in a rural area the backyard you owned most likely was very large and everything in it, including all the trees and space, where yours to do what you wished. If you had a bit more money you would be able to buy beeswax candles from traders passing through or if you where somewhat well off or owned animals or where in the fishing industry you could have access to animal or fish oils that you could have used for lanterns. If you where in the cities then most likely you would need to buy firewood, candles or oils like Olive oil or fish oil. The richer people generally tended to use oil while the poorer people generally tended to use firewood with candles acting as an in-between.

Once again depended on where you lived, obviously richer folk had a more varied diet however the average person who lived inland would usually rely on eggs, cereal grains like barley, rye, oats, buckwheat and of course wheat (bread was a staple in the medieval diet for all people in Europe). Meat was somewhat a luxury depending on where you lived or what you did, if you lived near a larger body of water or the sea then more than likely you would have fish as a part of you diet as it would be more common whereas if you lived inland then you would have some animal meat in your diet. Chicken was seen as a luxury meat for consumption for the sole fact that chickens produce eggs and in their logic only the wealthy would actively kill and eat something in which a single one had the ability to be able to provide food for multiple years for a family. You also had traded goods like spices from foreign continents which would almost always only be available for richer people. In terms of meat, it would usually be pork, beef and lamb if you where to ever eat meat, though once again with beef and lamb they have extra benefits like milk and wool if you owned one and they took more effort to raise whereas you basically don't need to raise pigs as a common practice in the middle ages was to let your pigs go in the community forest and then just go back and kill them whenever you feel they may be ready to slaughter. Goats where loathed though, since goats fucked up forests, so to own a goat means you basically fucked yourself.

Depends on the time period, in early medieval period it was usually papyrus paper, however when you get into the mid to late medieval period parchment, made from either sheep or goat skin, or vellum, which was specifically lamb or baby goat skin, was used more often than papyrus paper. In terms of what was written with, it was usually iron gall ink and their a quill, which would be the feathers of a duck, owl, goose, ect. Crow quills where usually used for finer lines whereas the goose quill was more expensive because it lasted longer.

Depends on societal status but everyone tried to be clean, be it always washing their hands or faces when they get the chance to or taking baths if they are able to. Also, people did not through their waste on the side of the streets, this was at most a thing in the very poorest of areas in the cities. People in rural areas usually constructed out houses in the back of their yards or, in cities and towns as well, there would be a public waste dump. There where also bath houses and public toilets as well though of course those had a fee attached to them. In inns you would be able to bathe, however that would of course cost you more money and especially if they offered hot water to bathe with. Soap was also available in the middle ages, but generally it was a luxury item to an extent, especially scented soaps. People really wanted to be clean they just didn't usually have the resources or money for it, they did the best they could though.

5. How did people transport themselves and things back then? What was available/invented at that period?

Pack animals, wheeled caravans and boats as well as just simply walking. If you where poor then chances are you where most likely going to have to walk everywhere you needed to go, if you had some money then you might own a horse or other pack anime and if you where a trader or someone richer then you might own a caravan to transport goods along the kings roads or other maintained roads. If you wanted to go to another country then you would be travelling by boat or land depending on which country If you had some money then you might be able to go to the local merchants guild, yes these where things with some of the most famous being the Hanseatic League, and pay to board one of their caravans or trade ships, if you had a caravan and money available then you could pay for guards on your trip. There was also a big thing of never travelling alone, if you where on route to a destination and met someone who was also travelling in the same direction then you would most likely choose to travel together, when your paths diverged you might meet up with other people going to your new destination and so forth. Also yes, travelers inns where a very real thing and these where usually also equipped with stables in order to accommodate animals with food provided and for a bit extra better quality food. If you did not have money for an inn then you would stay at the local church, as churches where obligated to take in any traveler and provide for them. Then if you where on a pilgrimage you would usually be travelling with a large guarded group to wherever you where going.
