Princession is neat, but it's trying way too hard to be Precure. It's basically just Precure with Symphogear's singing gimmick and without any sauce. After so many years of practice, Precure writers perfected the art of telling a fun story in the confines of the format and its strict limitations. This show, on the other hand, feels very clumsy. It tries to hit all the Precure beats so hard that there's no space left for its own identity. And the ban on all lewd content is stupid too, and rather hypocritical to hear from the Symphogear studio.
It could've been a Precure-esque show that does things Precure couldn't. But instead, it's just a Precure clone.
It's inferior in every single way compared to the very show it wanted to kill.

Happiness Charge was such a clumsy season. It had writing fuckups that I literally saw in Sonichu. Like for example, main character’s sister gets trapped in a mirror by the bad guys and everyone just forgets about it to have shitty romance until near the damn end of the show. It’s like Precure Sonichu but even then it doesn’t have the sheer joyous derangement and unfiltered fantasy of Sonichu so it doesn’t even have any of the potential entertainment value.

Liking one or two fringe seasons doesn't mean much for how attached to the series you're likely to become. You're usually better off jumping ship to a franchise that more wholly embodies the qualities you liked about them than to ram 50 episodes a season of, let's be fair, same-y toy commercials down your gullet unless it naturally goes down easy.

We had tons of magical girl shows in the 90s following a similar format.
The way I see it's not that this show wants to be Precure really hard, it's just that Precure has had a monopoly in the "magical girl for kids" genre for such a long time that people think Precure owns certain tropes and ideas. Precure didn't even invent most magical girl tropes.
Princession already stands out with the "singing while fighting" gimmick (which might be from Symphogear, but it's EXTREMELY underused, and it certainly wasn't used in a kid's show before) and by having the alternate idol reality thing ala Pripara.
All those concepts might not be revolutionary by itself, but this specific MIX is still very unique, and that's what makes the identity of a show: How you mix past ingredients, there's nothing new under the sun, what makes something unique is how you combine and shift concepts.

That said Princession still can deliver cool moments and stock footage, as seen in the Princess Zeal finisher and other inspired moments in fights - that while not a sakugafest, they were inspired. Reminds me of Fresh Precure, maybe not a lot of budget that doesn't stop the SOVL.

It's true that Precure pretty much monopolized the magical girl genre by this point, but it also has a very distinct set of ideas unique to it. There were battle heroines before Precure, like Cutie Honey and Sailor Moon, but it was the first magical girl show to put girls in frilly dresses and let their fists do ALL the talking, with only basic restrictions like "they should never be hit in the face". Princession is absolutely copying that, like Symphogear did before it. But Symphogear was actually unique in its concept, its budget allowed for the kind of high-class sakuga fights that Toei could never pull off, and it was aimed at older audiences.
Frankly, Princession looks like ass compared to Symphogear, to the point where I wonder if it's going to be a year-long show (for some reason, I couldn't find the information on its length anywhere). And with the rather boring story, I'm really starting to wonder if I should just drop it.

I personally don't think Princession's existence will affect what Precure plans to do in the future unless it's not a one off. Otherwise, Toei would have not decided to air the idol season the same exact year as that show; it's clearly barely a blip on their radar as of right now. I'd say it'll take at least 2 years after PO somehow becomes an ongoing franchise before we can attribute any trends in Precure to PO.
Interestingly, I'd say that Kimi to Idol feels a lot more like a traditional season than Hirogaru Sky. The traditional general meetings, even if they aren't objectively much, make KTI feel more traditional than an idol season might feel otherwise. There's definitely unique aspects to Kimi to Idol, but the occasional idol themed scenario and a higher focus on PR compared to other seasons still fit in the typical Precure formula in the same way the occasional space adventure didn't make ST feel too much like an atypical season (or at least not to the extent of HS, Wonderful, or even Hugtto).
Kimi to Idol seems like a return to form at least going by the first cour. I doubt the goal is to make an actually out there season. Even if HS and Wonderful didn't exist, I don't see how it deviates more than typical Precure than Doki, HaCha, or even the first 5 seasons.

It takes Princession Orchestra a few years to find success, but by 2030 Orchestra and Precure are basically tied and much of the 2030s are a Sega Genesis vs. Super Nintendo kind of rivalry. PO pulls ahead as the decade progresses though; in 2030 53 percent prefer Precure, in 2040 89 percent prefer Orchestra. Precure fans are mostly viewed with pity in my era as dinosaurs living in the past.

Hirogaru feels off mostly because of the lack of villain HQ meetings. It's a slight change in the overall formula, but it's a big enough shift that part of the reason why the last cour of HS doesn't really work all that well is because the writer didn't work around that change to develop the villain motivations properly. Wonderful managed to do it, which is part of the reason why most people don't complain about the villains of Wonderful as much despite the season also lacking villain HQ meetings ... and only having the villains around for less than half the time.
The most "un-Precure" season definitely depends on who you ask, but in my opinion, it's one of the following seasons: Doki, HaCha, Hugtto, Hirogaru Sky, or Wonderful. Heartcatch, Smile and Kira Kira are also worth mentioning in this context, though I don't think they are nearly as atypical as the other seasons I mentioned.

I mean it's no Symphogear XV henshin but neither are all the examples of "better" henshins. I totally expect them to get a second henshin after their henshin items get blown up mid show. I'm looking forward to more songs though. Each girl is only getting the full henshin every 3rd episode if it's her song/fight but the initial songs don't hook me like the symphogear ones did. I get that the VA's for all of them are relatively new and none of them are an Ayahi Takagaki or a Nana Mizuki. Maybe their 2nd and 3rd songs will be better whenever they get to those.

I'm not criticizing Toei Animation there. Henshin scenes are top of the line, it's directly tied to Bandai toy advertising and revenue and the kids/toddlers like those a lot. Toei knows how to mix passably animated episodes with good ones.
Since Princession producers are aiming at a broader audience they are trying to not feed us stock footage too much and are actually trying seriously with the singing and fighting theme, instead of doing 3DCG singing and dancing at the end of an episode like Idol Precure does. But it's much harder to do over 50 weeks.
I'm glad too. I think Merorun will be a strong contender but I think I'll end up still rooting for Purirun. She's got the right amount of spice being a fairy who clearly wants to be part of the team properly but can't yet. That hits different from Kokoro who initially could, but didn't want to.
