Evangelion isn't even that hard to understand. Its ideas are laid out very plainly and in a manner that's hardly abstract if you're not a retarded zoom zoom who doesn't have basic reading comprehension.

Almost everyone loves this anime, pseuds are just included under that umbrella. The massive popularity has a feedback effect because the pseud gets more of that sweet engagement dopamine from talking about it than they would from pseuding over something less widely known and this veneer of intellectualism in turn makes it more popular.

Because it was the first anime that was very psychological. Yes, other Anime had psychological elements before Eva, but it was never as explicit as Eva. Plus it had some esoteric elements, which is honey trap to Pseuds
